Umm, no.

A company clearly not concerned with ethical advertising if that is anything to go by.

Chris I think AMS Neve own that particular one. Probably not the original one though. Probably something Rupert agreed too many moons ago. It's used on the new console and most other gear. RN has his signature these days. R.

Riiiiiiiiiiiicccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkk! (sorry that was loud) .............We need conformation on this story.

or....

maybe I'll googlify it? :D

I wonder with all that surface mount stuff, will it have that vintage hiss?

32 volts. Okay... and then?

Have you guys used the AMS 1073dpa thing? Apparently this is basically half of one of those. What do you think of it? I was pleasantly surprised when the assistant at 301 suggested it on a session I was doing the other week. Sounded similar to various vintage "real" Neves I've used over the years. I know this thing won't be an actual factual old 1290, but it could very well sound as good.

I will, of course, reserve judgment until I hear one though.

well +- 16 v ......15.6 volts
which can be made into 30v if your 500 racks power supply actually has the juice to spare to power a few class A neve modules at the same time as the rest of the normal stuff which wasnt expecting to have a neve class A heater plugged in along side it

they dont pull that much current really but over many years i have certainly decided that neves sound best when the power supply is
"more then adequite"

thats not how i would describe most 500 series racks power supplies :(
err that is if neve decided it was best to drop the o v tapp and then create 30 v then drop it down to 24 v ..? inside the neve module

but maybe they just decided it was easier to just run it on +15 v for ease of keeping all those surface mount chips from exploding on contact
or they added a dc/dc upper for the actual output amp to get 24 volts ?
or maybe its running on dual rails ? or not not class A at all
or maybe ...?

well maybe its a bit different to a historic one because they had to put it in a 500 rack !

yes thats it ..for sure
probably sounds great

16volts vs 24volts
16bit vs 24bit

Its all a matter of headroom is it not?

yes headroom sure
but in the case of the neves running into or out of headroom its all to do with the "sweet spot "
if you move the voltages rails around presumabily you move the sweet spot around as well
but maybe they factor that in the 500s maybe they dont
nobody on gearsltuz seem to have mentioned it though :)

Kristian -
Im ok with Neve Schmeve!
as long as you don't say Electrodyne Schelectrodyne - OR Quadeight Schaudeight
Here comes trouble............
In my experience most Neve preamps are pretty average.
its the EQ interacting with the preamp and the source material that makes the good models really killer (1073 etc).
But as straight pre's they are pretty boring and lifeless (not open in the top end) compared with other great pre's (hence needing the eq to open the top end up to get some life into the material)
My guess is they would never have survived in use today without such great EQ.
And then as Rick noted its the power supply - heaps of it that makes mic pre's /EQ's come to life ( 500 series???? ).
As a mic pre my Quadeight Coranado (with a massive overpowered Neve P/S running the audio) leaves them for dead 8 out 10 times ! - and I have had Jim Moginies 1073's / 1081's /1066's etc many times on hire for sessions up against the quadeights and the surprise on peoples faces when they A/B the Neve's to the Quadeights.
And then there is my Electrodyne 711's - Total Neve eaters!
BUT the good neve EQ's are killer - no doubt
Kristain - I don't think I can accept Neve EQ Schmeve EQ !

AND - Rick - I have been mixing my medicines - and I like it!
Hope your feeling well Kristian

lol.

I'm not totally against Neve. Just that it's so out of my price range has made me look closely at other gear and there is so much good stuff out there that "Neve" just doesn't matter to me.

Has anyone used one of these yet?

I have one space left in my lunch box...i own a TG500 and a BA2 (jlm audio) and i am looking at adding 1 more 500 series preamp.

The baby animals end up as overheads on drums. The TG500 sits on snare.

Wondering about the 1073lb for the 4th preamp for drums and other duties.

The other ones i am considering are jlm's 99nv or nv500, api 512c.

Advise appreciated

Cheers

Hey Myles

I remember reading about that preamp.

So you are happy with it?

I also see vintech has a 573.

To be honest , i am really curious aboutbthe thought of a 1073 that i can afford.....neves marketing ploy is working...8).

Will go and look up the vp26 again

My very quick unscientific test of using my voice through a 1073LB compared to a BAE 1073 eq bypassed showed 'some' differences. Haven't had a chance to compare on a session yet. If the Neve will add bling to your studio go for it, but there are so many pres to choose from now i can't help but feel like its a marketing thing.

Most of the few clients I have, wouldn't know a Neve from a hole in the ground.

I know its stoopid, but I would really like to own a "neve" one day....8). Must.....resist.....marketing inspired urges....must resist 8)

I suppose I should just save up my pocket money, and get a real 1073 or 1081. Thats probably the correct answer.

I was taking a break outside the studio for a few minutes, thinking of worldly things, and thinking of things I had bought previously, that cost me way more than a neve, that I essentially lost every penny on.

Ta@#$% 688 $4800

Roland VS880 $4000

Yamaha AW4416 $4500

13,300 dollars and that was with about 5 secs of thinking.

ah hindsight, its a bitch 8)

thats a lot of neve 8)
