Gefell m692 vs m582

Postby justin » Sun Nov 07, 2010 11:14 am

Anyone here had real experience with both?

I just opened my "things to do on a rainy day" box, and found the old RFT Gefell m582 I bought 6 or 7 years ago on the bay.
No cable, no power supply, no capsule (and doesn't accept the regular threaded capsules)
EC92 valve (no legible makers mark)

I do have a bunch of operational Gefells (a PM750, some m690's and m692's), and would be prepared to "borrow" the capsule thread from one...
I guess I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the effort to source the bits required to resurrect this little guy, or whether I throw it back to the hounds..

Cheers,

I don't have a 582 to hand (had been meaning to get one, but probably never will).

But:
Cable should just be the same as a 692, power supply is the same as a 692

nah different supply different cable
if you had a capsule then its well worth getting a supply and cable , if your capsule is missing your going to end up with a great sounding but EXPENSIVE Mic to get it going.
my advice is put the rft geffel back on ebay , take what you can get the money and put it towards something else
if you had a neumman m582 without a capsule i would be recommending you send it to me to live .
but to answer your questions i reckon both those little condensers sound great , the 692 less so
but they use the same capsule so its of the same tone

I've a pair of 692 with m93 omni caps and m70 cadioid caps and a multi pattern LD um70 cap and I really like them. Smooth sounding with plenty of detail, accurate but not heavy bass tones. The omnis sound great in an ortf setting and the UM70 sounds great on voice. I think the um70 has an M7 capsule in it.
Not played with a m582 but I'd love to especially as it would take all of the above caps and a couple more.

I have both.
1 x M582 with original PSU
2 x 692 with M58 omni caps, an M70 cardiod, and a UM70 multipattern.

I like them both. Particularly the 582 with omni cap on acoustic guitar.
It's one of the few mics that can tame my Martin D28.

You need a mod done on the thread of the 582 to use the UM70.

Thanks guys,

looks like the 582 is going back to the bay.
I do love my 692's, but don't think i can justify the restoration expense just to get a valve in the signal path!
