Hi all..
In a lesson for how NOT to remove equipment from a rack...
I was moving around some of my outboard in the rack. Our little TL Audio eq wouldn't come out straight away. In a moment of madness i thought i could pull it out by grabbing one of the knobs..
Long story short.. i need someone who can repair/replace an eq knob. It's not just the knob itself.. but the shaft and everything.
Any ideas?

HH,
You heard the man - bring it over and I'll have a look at it. Should only take 15 minutes and won't cost you a cent.
I have ~lots~ of pots.

I wish I had a quid for every time I've heard these naive statements. Despite first appearances, most pots are unique (Why? Because you have to consider the value vs the pot diameter vs the shaft length vs the shaft diameter vs the pin spacing yada yada yada). I can guarantee that you won't be able to just pick up one to do the job from Jaycar.
There is also a fair chance that it won't be a 15 minute job - another naive statement. It is likely that, at the very least, the front panel will have to be removed and this involves removing all the other knobs. Depending on whether these have locking collets, this may take some time. Of course, if this TLA uses the double front panel arrangement so beloved of UK manufacturers, then it will take considerably more time - it takes about an hour just to remove the front panel & fascia from a Drawmer device and then re-install. That is before you have even changed the pot.
Contact the service department at Audio Products Group in Alexandria in Sydney who import TLA. Tell them which pot requires replacement and establish whether or not they even have this part in stock - unlikely in my experience of servicing TLA. If yes, send your unit to them and get them to fix it. If they don't have the part, get them to back-order it and prepare yourself for a long wait.

I forgot that distribution of TLA had moved to Technical Audio Group in Stanmore. Sydney. Ring TAG to enquire about your part. You should also try to establish whether or not APG's stock of TLA spares went to TAG at the time of the changeover.

Hi,
Michael dropped the eq around yesterday. It took me 15 minutes to pull it apart, 30 seconds to identify the pot (linear 100K) and 30 minutes (and $1.72) to pick one up from Dick Smith.
Yes the front panel had to be removed, and yes there was a second panel that all the pots were screwed into. All up it took me around 45 minutes of work.
Naive? maybe. I said '15 minutes and won't cost you a cent', but in reality it took 45 minutes and cost $1.72.
Cheers
Chris

I just want to say one or two things..
Being a self taught engineer, i sometimes wonder whether my lack of technical knowledge holds me back. I don't know a lot about the insides of most of the stuff i use everyday.. thought i do know a lot about guitars, drums, and vocal harmony.. oh and songwriting.
So when something like this breaks down out of my own stupidity, i'm overwhelmed by no knowledge of how bad it is. One person says it's minor.. another says it's major.
I'm not exactly sure what point i wanted to make out of all that, except to say that i admire the technical expertise of all on this board who know more than i in technical terms. I believe it's a good place for me to be when i can lean on you all who know more than i about some aspects of being an engineer type.
More directly.. i want to speak about goodwill. It's tough making a living out there as we all know. Our time is precious, and we regularly find ourselves counting the worth of a project by how much time it will take. With this in mind, i tip my hat largely to Mr Linear.. who cautiously snuck up on me, his next door neighbour, about 20 minutes ago in the dead of night while i was unloading my drums after another long difficult gig, to give me back my broken eq. He had a smile on his face, told me it was no trouble and no charge. I immediately, put that in the goodwill bank, and publicly say how impressed i am that someone like Chris would go out of his way to help out a neighbour, even in this little small way... I know Linear is busy right now, so i super appreciate it.
Chris would probably brush it off as nothing, but i was struck by how far a good gesture will go, and have made a mental note to myself to pass it on to someone else when the time comes.
Cheers all..
