Neck for guitar project

Postby lonearranger » Thu Nov 18, 2010 1:25 am

I am looking for a neck for a project. Bolt on strat fitting but as retro non fender looking as possible(think airline/supro etc). Ideally white or red and jumbo frets. Let me know if you have something in the shed that might work.

Alternatively anyone in Sydney who can cut and finish an allparts paddle head neck to my design.

Cheers

Welcome to the world of trying to buy a reasonable strat neck.
I have been trying to buy a nice Fender USA strat neck on and off for 2 years.
They all seem to go for big bucks like over $300.
Maybe now that new USA fender strats can be had for $1325 on plain colours I might be best just picking up one of these.

Some shops have Fender American Standard Strats and Tele for as low as $1325 (Logans Pianos Burwood) for solid colours on alder bodies and Tansparency Crimson Red and Natural on Ash bodies for $1525. Turramurra Music and Billy Hydes/Allans are doing Fender American Standard Strats and Teles solid colours for $1499 and Tansparency Crimson Red and Natural on Ash bodies for $1599.
I bought a American Standard Telecaster for $1539 only 3 weeks ago (I feel a little ripped off because I could have gotten Billy Hyde to match Logans Pianos advertised price of $1325). Billy Hyde are really good at trying to keep prices hush hush when there is going to be a price drop (even when you ask a direct question like - "due the strength of the Aussie dollar will the prices be dropping dramatically over the coming weeks"?) silence. If I knew within 3 week of buying the Tele the price was going to drop $215 I would have waited. I won't be shopping at any of the Billy Hydes/Allens in Sydney anymore."

David - thanks for the tip.

Dale, have you considered any of the aftermarket necks. There seems to be a plethora of these around, the pick of these, from the reading I have been doing seem to be warmoth, allparts and USACG. Lots and lots of options when you want a straty looking headstock. Mighty Might are even cheaper and musicians freind sells them and ships to AU. Some of these you will need to get finished, which you need to keep in mind.

I was trying to keep it original for resale value later down the track.
BTW I have a set of 3 Noiseless pickups if anyone is interested.
