The Michell GyroDec is rather good, though I don't really deal with restoration any more, but have also done so from a modified SL1200 MkI.

Former workplace.. custom base and housing, possibly a non-stock tone arm (can't recall), also half and quarter speed capable, and custom preamp.

Re: vinyl archiving...
so...a conversation with a Sydney audiofile shop...
went something like this:
you cant archive on "dj" turntables, because they back track (ie. allow reverse cueing)
You need to buy this clear audio turntable, with cartridge, it's one editors choice award everywhere...
this guy wouldnt have it any other way...
anyway...what are people's experiences archiving with a technics 1200?? i feel they are probably going to be ok, are the tone arms that much of a compromise with the right needle.
i was hopeing to try some options at this place, but they were incredibly difficult...so i feel like im back to square one.

Re: vinyl archiving...
technics 1200 sl is not only fine its an admirable choice
a lot of dj decks are setup with the cartridge tracking too heavy though which can cause playback distortion issues
but thats what the what the weights on the tone arm are for

Re: vinyl archiving...
Hey jamil you're right the audiophile guys can go a bit nuts, a 1200 will do the job I reckon.
One thing which will make a big difference is the stylus you use. If you have the money, some kind of fine line stylus will tracks a lot cleaner and minimises things such as inner groove distortion, surface noise etc. Audio technica at-440Mla is a good example of this. The last thing you want is an archive that gets progressively more distorted over the last 5 mins and has a bunch of sibilance problems!

Re: vinyl archiving...
For archiving my preference is a Technics SP10 MKII Deck. 3 speed and can be modded for brake release for easy cueing very low rumble. Tone arm- SME 3009 MKII or MK III with oil damper. Cartridge - Ortofon Moving Coil , Shure V15 MK IV, V or V-MR, Stanton 681-EEE or 881 or Decca FFSS- has mono output as well as Stereo (If you can find one).Preamp for RIAA- REVOX Elegance or B260 (very clean, quiet and accurate RIAA, MC or MM , Discrete component). For early non RIAA vinyl and 78s QUAD QCII for Mono (Valve with selectable EQ curves) or Quad 22 for Stereo (valve with EQ curves , but not as flexible as QCII) That's my 2c worth.

Re: vinyl archiving...
I assure you, there is a limit to my funds.
So far i have narrowed down some possible preamp choices:
Radial Phono Preamp > DAV Electronics BG1
or.
Rane PS-1 phono preamp (with adjustable cartidge loading - looks like better option than the above) this one also has gain, and outputs line level.
Still clueless as to what i want for cartidges...so many choices...

Re: vinyl archiving...
Certainly a good Stanton , say a 681 0r 881, something with a hypereliptical stylus, not a 500 with a conical. A Shure V15 family or an Ortofon Hi Fi cartridge
http://www.speakerbits.com/products/vinyl/ortofon/list-137.aspx They start from $85 up to nearly $4500. I've got 4 ortofons (MM and MC). They've always made great cartidges, In the old days before back cueing became the norm, many radio stations used Ortofons, but they must be respected and cared for. Treat them rough and you'll break them. If you want to be a DJ use a Stanton 500 or a Shure SC35 at 5 grams. The detail you get from a good MC cartridge at 3/4 gram on a good arm and turntable is just a joy to listen to, with the right amp and speakers of course. I'm a sucker for strings or Woodwind chamber music from vinyl through Quad II Valve amps and Electrostatic speakers in a very quiet room
