Neve Clone Shootout ???

Postby David W » Thu Jun 29, 2006 11:13 am

Hi Guy's
There was a thread a while back on Neve clones but can't find it.

Anyway just wondering if this shootout happend.

My interest lies in that I have a dual JLM 1290 clone and have been considdering buying a genuine product.I have only ever seen 1 picture of the neve 1290 so I guess they may be rare and a 1073 might be in order.

The JLM 1290 sounds great and has a familiar sound to it but I haven't had the pleasure of using the genuine thing. Can anyone offer there experiences.

It's a shame the test never got off the ground but does it really matter if your pre is Neve (1073)sounding. I have 2 x Chandler LTD-1 and I must say I love them, but I also have other pres that play a major part in the mix.
Eg: API 312, Germanium, TG2, even my 01V 96 gets used.
When I first got the LTD-1, well everything went through it and the mix sounded thick and heavy (I really didn't mind the sound) but now as my pre collection got bigger I have more variety sonically.
Gee what ever happened to the Avalon 737....remember them?

Wunder has a different sound then a 1073 style Neve, as they are not based on a 1073 style Neve but anoither neve pre. They do fit into the same size rack etc Although are different. All clones are different sounding I played with wunder against my old shep 1084 and Great River NV1. They are all different yet good.
Why not just get him to go to Awave and try. Pretty sure they do Vintech,Wunder and Great river now.

i just baught a Vintech X81 for the bloke im touring with (for a LIVE voacal mic pre, coz he wanted it).

anyway i LOVE the sound of this thing. actually i used the x73i, then baught the X81 as it has a level meter and more eq. i havent used the x81 yet.

does anyone know if these are really the "neve" sound? all the net/review stuff says they are. but are they really?

i think the x71i was great. i hope the x81 is the same, with more eq (its supposed to be)....

thanks damien

Not too sure about the real 1073 but my friend did a shootout with the x71i and the Chandler LTD-1 and there wasn't much in it sonically but he did say the eq was better on the LTD-1.
I think I'll be looking at the Vintech next time myself. I have 2 x LTD-1, great buy expensive.
