One of the perks of manufacturing is that there is so much incoming freight, the new gear just gets mixed into the pile.

Re: SYDNEY Turtlerock - Next one early December
lets try not to make it too complicated ( i have many mic pres )
but if anybody starts asking about this thing we are doing its much easier to start and end with
oh we used ricks neves ...
but i just thought i thought peter had neves or a neve frame ( that holds at least two 1073 ) that could to hold some of mine in
or maybe i am going to switch the gameplan to the "Starwars" Quadeights
then we could use the force etc etc
so maybe just bring your mics and your sense of humour ben
you might need one of them in case you lose the other

Re: SYDNEY Turtlerock - Next one early December
Hi Rick,
I have a pair of BA1073 unmatched. They are the single 19" rack mount version. Unfortunately, it's very hard to remove them from my rack as the rear is inaccessible and they're connected to my patch bay. My only other pair is the API 7600's and they are patched in the rack the same way. I recon run with the Quad 8's if they are in good order. Although, I do have a pair of Neve clones from the group buy, ACMP73, but I've never turned them on . I can easily bring those BUT......
Just remembered, I have the stereo Neve 51's racked by Rob that you sold me Rick. I can bring that if you like. Recapped and runs great. I still recon the Quad 8's would be best though.
Let me know.
Cheers

If we are testing mics, shouldn't we be using preamps that are fairly neutral?

i might bring along my buzz elixir's just in case as they are matched and very transparent and fast sounding. At least this way it'll load my car down a little more.

I have read this over about three or four times , the answer is still the same
i dont understand the question at all !
the whole idea of "neutral" "clean" or "coloured" mic pres doesnt not really make any sense to me
it never has
its commonly repeated , and now "gospel" misinformation i reckon
we should be using real world mic pres that you would and do use to make records with .
if a mic pre sounds in combination with a microphone like a noise that will survive being squished into a mix and spat out of an 8 "speaker '
in a months time in the mix sounded great , thats the mic pre to use .
and if the mic survives that test its the mic to use .
and thus the test is for this week "can either of these mic record a male vocal to completion , straight out of the gate "
can they record a "big acoustic guitar " without losing the emotional essence of it
that is the simple meat and potatoes challenge for any LDC mic ... to make sounds that hold up in a mix in a emotional and technically pleasing way
some mics will fare better the others and it is immediately obvious to me which are the "users goto" mic sounds and which are the
"well i will just have to LEARN to use this mic " sounds
that will be the defination of which is the better microphone
i dont what to pay 1-2 months (or more ) wages on a mic or a mic pre that i have to learn to use...
"technically, electronically and emotionally the classic Neves and QE in combination with the "big five classic mics "
fill this role perfectly "
i cannot put coloured or transparent , or fairly neutral mic pres in that sentence.
FYI both classic neves and QE have a very very flat freq response on test tones . I test that stuff all the time
but microphones are not test tones ....
records are not about freq response charts
none of this stuff would float in a gearslutz style shootout i understand that

Re: SYDNEY Turtlerock - Next one early December
Actually given the ramifications of picking one mic over the other
I will stay up late tonight and rework another neve rack I have lying about
I was just looking to make my workload easier
then are playing the neve 1073 game
nobody can argue the toss over that choice:)

damn ... if I'd known that the QE 312s were going to pushed to the front on such a hallowed occasion I'd have left the manufacturing fault intact!

Rick, didn't Jim leave you in charge of the weather?? Whilst your fixing those Neves, see if you can piss this rain off too.
See you Sunday.

not to worry .. the broadcast get together is probably happening on Dec 15
Sadly, I won't be able to make it this Sunday ... I have already lined up a date with a rather attractive female

Re: SYDNEY Turtlerock - Next one early December
just swapped time for sleep , and reworked another neve rack i had and with a different power supply for the occasion
so it will be the classic neve pres gentleman
did we ever work out who was singing ...?
is he coming along
my iphone says sunday is marked for rain !
if that is the case and we can decide on the day
if the BBQ and sitting in the park is off i will pony up for a very large run of oporto chicken if we are all stuck inside
but still sort out your own drinks i reckon.
So if it is pouring we will go ahead with the mic shootout and a meet and greet
but it may be a bit much all of us milling round jims studio making merry the whole time
so its its a washout dont feel obliged to front up ..
there will be a turtlerock BBQ bi monthly for as long as people are interested i reckon
so we might see the non waterproof set of you guys at another one soon !
bugger the rain !
