Cheers Glenn! That should be doable... will just have to get the computer to stay up till the early morning to take advantage of those unusable 'off peak' internet times

Nah, really just a victim of my own tight-arsed ways. My place gets 10gb of fast interwebbing per month, 5 of which is between 2am and 8am.

Ouch, I hope that's really cheap.... Canberra also has some of the worst internet speeds of any of the capitals too. Although we're treated as a "regional centre" so we will get some early work done in the NBN rollout (if it happens)

Just looked up my isp, my plan is so outdated it's not even offered anymore! New plan is $10 more but a shtload bigger
Hah, really should keep up with the times..

It is pretty cheap either way. Naked dsl, you don't pay line rental and you get phone calls.

And yeh, bloody ridiculous some of the inner north can't even get dsl.

Anyone (apart from Myles) running PT9 on a 3rd party firewire interface successfully?
What are you using?
I think it might be time to ditch the 002...

I have had PT 9 working on (variously) a Mackie Onyx 1620 firewire mixer, Apogee Duet & Ensemble....

I reckon the new fireface800 is going to be a killer, lots of i/o options, onboard dsp, cross platform support is excellent and the audio quality whilst not the top notch is still very useable. Other ones to look out for though are the tc electonics stuff (haven't used but looks good), Apogee X-series with a firewire card, lynx with the firewire card option. The last two dont have anything but converters (no dsp, no mic pre's, etc) but do sound great so all depends on the situation. 002's, 003',s mboxes are all going to be in the trash.

My A&H Zed-R16 is working great with PT9 (had to tweak the i/o settings but once that was done it's sweet!!)

With the loosening of the 'Digidesign' lock down of Protools interface and often-needed features, sound engineers the world over began dancing in the streets.

True, there's been a lot of euphoria.

It's yet to be seen what the final effect will be though. It will probably ultimately result in a shrinkage of market share for some other DAWs, that may lead to their demise and a narrowing of diversity.

Not that there's been all that much real diversity, since all of the major DAW vendors copy each other's feature sets for the most part, with the similarities outweighing the differences in most respects. Still, some competition (and some options) is no bad thing. :-?

Ok so I've been using Tools 9 for a while now.

ADC has changed my world!! Im not not irking away from my Liquid Mix or Duende(which in all honesty was not a problem with LE due to the way SSL set up its processing power).

Stability is good for me, overall win in my books.

Hows everyone else been finding it?

It's been pretty much fantastic for me.

I've managed to stay away from dreaded Cubase for quite some time now.

I did have some trouble with some REALLY weird glitches where Pro Tools would route things to outputs other than the ones I'd told it to... But since doing a clean reinstall of 9.01 it seems to have cleared up.

I am having some trouble with my Firestudio and Pro tools getting along. They don't like talking about sample rate, sometimes I'll open up a 2nd session and pro tools will complain that the firestudio isn't at the right sample rate, when the firestudio says it is. But I've had lots of similar issues with the firestudio and cubase, so I'd be happy to ditch the Firestudio.

But being able to keep my entire workflow in one program has been amazing. Bringing back projects from other studios and not losing any automation/panning has been brilliant, plus laying down overdubs here has been a breeze since pro tools is a much nicer platform for recording and managing takes.

And of course the ADC is great. Running assloads of UAD2 plugs and outboard with crazy routing and Pro tools has kept it tight.

the way we record it is still the same, just more long winded ,sure u can do this and do that , but it sucks the living life out of it, im saving up for a tape machine like i used to use .
Hands up! who can honestly say that the recordings they r now producing r any better than the ones they did 20 odd years ago without all the idiot tools available ,
i to like to think things have changed but in reality it seems to have gone backwards,my life in the world of pro audio has dramatically changed ,i look back on 30 odd years of a recording career and remember the times i had with a tape machine and a good artist ,
best of all no upgrades and no becoming a computer nerd, give me some honest no bull program ,if they exist, good , if not then then take me back dreamland.

That is a bit grim for 8am in the morning...

All I can say is, upgrading to protools 9 from logic has improved my mixes. It allows me to do things faster, and the addition of coreaudio compatibility means protools slipped right into my existing setup in the space of 20 minutes. To each their own I guess... I'm not entirely running the latest and greatest, but I am starting to feel that my setup is in a great place. A place that just lets the music flow. How can that be a bad thing?

For those on a mac- is there any way to get PT9 running on OSX 10.5? The documentation on the Avid site states that it's 10.6 only, which is a bit of a pain.

I'm just getting incredibly fed up with Logic crashing every 2-3 days and ruining work. The great one this week is two large sessions I've been working on now refusing to let me solo tracks for no apparent reason......

I've not tried running it on 10.5 but upgrading to 10.6 was very easy and the os is about $20-30 from the apple store. I've had no problems with plugin incompatibility, no issues with other programs like Logic (any more than usual anyway). This has been one of the times when the apple thing just works. I'm really appreciating the new features of PT9 though I haven't upgraded my HD setup only the LE. I know I can use the same PT authorisation for both machines but sometimes I use both at the same time...

Thanks Myles-
Yeah, the cost of upgrading to 10.6 isn't scary, it's the idea of losing stuff. Glad to hear it worked ok for you, I find I always lose something in updates. Then again, my comp crashed pretty hard last week on 10.5, so maybe it's time.

Well, I did a complete time machine backup (which doesn't copy the os just your personal settings in the os plus all of your other data) and then did a clean install of 10.6 and rebuilt from the time machine backup when the OS install asks you if you want to migrate from a previous system. Takes awhile but was absolutely smooth. If you still have your 10.5 install disc then you can always wipe the new setup, install 10.5 and go back to your time machine backup and return to your original setup. You shouldn't need to though, I've done this three or four times (time machine migration) with no hiccups other than long waits.

Yep, sounds straight forward. Would you believe last week when my comp crashed, I pulled out my time machine disk (just an old USB harddrive) and it had died too! Now that was scary, particularly when I'd done a session the day before and was turning my comp on to make backups across to my network drive.
Luckily I had backups of those files, but also found out about the whole 'connect 2 macs with a firewire cable and boot up as a harddrive thing', which saved me a whole lot of grief, and I managed to save everything. Still ended up taking a good 8 hours or so though...

I've been in that situation too, not pleasant. I once accidentally deleted a clients recording of his final recital just before he arrived in the studio. Attempted to restore the deleted data to no avail. Boy did I fell like an idiot.... Thankfully nothing like that has happened in several years. Backups are the best.

Luckily I've never lost anything... I'm sure it's a matter of time, but I try and make 3 backups of stuff. We got a networked drive year which is great. I try to keep session files on the comp, network drive and then Time Machine once every 2-3 weeks. It's just a good reminder to stay on top of things when your Time Machine dies the same week your computer does! The network has session files on it, but no programs or OS stuff.

The main reason I want to get off Logic is that it has deleted some stuff on me before. On a session I did for myself it deleted the guitar track halfway through a song. Luckily I had two mics on the amp, but you get a pretty different guitar sound running an U87 and Beyer M260 compared to just running the Beyer...

Logic is THE most unreliable piece of software I've ever used. Repeatable faults, unexplained oddness, random moving of soundbites, internal plugin distortion etc etc. The editing is terrible as is the mixing/bussing options. There are a few redeeming graces but not enough to ever make me want to use it. I can't believe anybody does professional work on it to be honest but I know that people do. I even have to teach it when I teach at university but what a chore... so glad that 'tools is now interface independant though the better option to logic if you want to be completely native and non-PT is digital performer. Rock solid, good editing, decent plugins and architecture, been 64bit for years and very good midi too.
