Omnisphere and Mac Pro

Hey y'all,

I've been playing around with omnisphere again recently and discovered why I left it alone a while back - it's so damn hungry on the system. It seriously slows down, sometimes grinding to a halt. "Halt" being it actually shits itself and throws up the increase buffer size message in pro tools. You'd think a 12-month old Mac Pro with 8GB RAM would be capable of providing enough resources to it, but apparently not. It varies depending on which preset I use, but I'm finding that I have to frequently change my buffer in pro tools which is fine except of course the higher you go the more latency you get and therefore it's unusable at that point.

Is anyone using this themselves? Sharing my frustration? Omnisphere has a lot of impressive and usable sounds but unless I'm overlooking settings, I can't work with it at the moment. If it's a RAM issue, then fair enough. But 8GB whilst not being massive, isn't light-on either. I have similar frustrations with Vienna Symphonic Library to a lesser extent.

Dave, I use Omnisphere (64-bit version) in Logic Pro (64-bit) and have no problems. However if I run a few instances in 32-bit, it does eat up resources hugely. Being able to use the 64-bit version of the Spectrasonics software is the key to fewer problems. Sorry, I don't know if PT is 64-bit or 32-bit (Logic you can choose to run the app in either configuration). Maybe check you have the latest 64-bit updates?

Thanks, Steve. I must admit that up until today that wasn't anything I had thought of. Picked up a copy of SOS this morning and low and behold they are talking about this exact thing. Mentions it also has a lot to do with whether the host OS is 64-bit. Not even sure if my OSX is, guess I should look into that. I don't fully understand it all and my computer is my iPhone until I have set up my space so there won't be much googling going about this for me.

I think pro tools supports/runs on 64 bit OS but isn't itself 64 bit. Huh? I don't know, some more reading to do I guess unless there are other 'tools users who can chime in.

snow leopard is 64 bit natively i believe,

also 32 bit OS only recognises 4 GB of RAM so make sure on that too otherwise you'll have extra ram just hanging out
