I have tried to do this with the iphone, but need midi in.
I would like to use it with midi triggers, 0m-4ms latency.
would prefer not to use a computer.
Any ideas? something small is preferable.

There are midi interfaces available for the iPhone.
What's a midi trigger? If it's like the audio->midi part of a drum brain, why not look for something that's more direct? Voice memo COB type kit for example.
Correct me if I'm wrong:
Your idea:
Action -> electrical signal -> midi -> sample player
Simpler:
Action -> electrical signal -> Sample player

BOSS sp-202 (lo quality samples) sp-303 , sp-505
If rack is not too big then there were lots of rack samplers by roland, yamaha, akai - some of the more recent ones had flash memory.
Cheers

Re: Need a really small hardware sampler with midi in.
Kurt, you hit the nail on the head.
Currently I am running Vpads into an irig 1/4" adaptor.
The irig is triggering the IGOG on my iphone, also providing an individual output.
I am then summing into a passive mixer between kick and snare.
So whats the drawback?
Latency is not amazing.
Need 4 iphones for 4 triggers.
If I could load an alesis io into a midi interface to trigger something on my iphone, let me know.
I could map and manage from one point
ideas?
thanks
Chris

sp303 looks pretty good.
Anything smaller? dont really need the onboard fx or buttons. just a dumb unit.

I was thinking something like this: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=KC5454
Of course I have no idea how long the samples you need to play are, or what is used as the trigger. This could do it though, if the samples are short and the trigger is a physical action (button press or similar)

24 inputs to midi.. depending on your triggers (piezo etc, you will prob need some sort of conversion in-between)
