Vintage Pre's, Channelstrips, Comps, modules...updated!

So I've got a few different pre's on offer. All of them are high quality vintage units racked and ready to go. These are the real deal, vintage units built to last and at very high quality. All work perfectly to the best of my knowledge and have all been used extensively by me for various recording projects, feel free to ask any questions. I'll be selling off a bunch of things as I have too much stuff for my current setup (40channels of pre's 16-20 channels of comps etc) so if there's anything else you're in need of or interested in let me know.

A 2 channel MCI JH500 channel strips. Transformer balanced i/o with mic pre, DI, switched inductor based eq. Brilliant unit and racked by Rob Squire of ProHarmonic like this with external power supply. $1800 on hold

A 2 channel auditronics 501 set of channel strips. transformer i/o with Mic pre, 4 band inductor eq and filters. These came out of Francis Ford Coppola's private studio and tracked/mixed the Godfather and several other significant movies. I have the paperwork somewhere on disc to prove it. I would only sell this because I've got two units. Looks almost exactly like this though mine was racked by Pickstone Audio Engineering with an external power supply. $1800 sold

A mid 70's Siemens V276 racked pair. This are very high quality german mic pre's with over 70db of gain, trim and a variable high pass filter. Built to the exacting standards of the german broadcast with haufe and pikatron transformers for i/o. You can read about them all over the web designed as the non-valve follower of the v76 which was the mic pre used on the early beatles recordings as well as countless recordings of the 60-70's. Nice clean racking job in a 2ru silver case with external power supply. $1500 sold

A very rare pair of Kajaani mic pre and eq modules. These are fully discrete with lundahl input transformer and 70db of gain on the mic pre. EQ is switched with high/low pass filters and 2 switched sweep bands of boost/cut. Built in Finland these are very cool indeed. Racked in a 2ru case with external power supply. $1500 sold

I also have a Gain Ryder 3 stereo Valve compressor. Handbuilt by a chap in NY who no longer makes them, these are a feature of a lot of NY studios and broadway shows. Got this from a US friend, altered the power supply with directions from the designer and tested it but haven't wired it into my setup and I've realised I just have way too much stuff. Excellent stereo or dual mono opto compressor with great valve tone. $1200

And lastly, I have a hand built DIY clone of the 1176-2. Its a direct copy of the 1970's circuit of the 1176 put into a case that looks like the current UA reissue. Sounds great and its also been recently serviced by Rob Squire to make certain it operates correctly even though its DIY. A couple of the switches on the front panel are inaccurate though as the original units were a little different from the current versions. No limitations on the units though, they do what they're supposed to and sound excellent. I dig this a lot but I've got other units that do the 1176 sound. $1200 sold

Thanks chris but it really IS a mini sell off, I've got more stuff than I could poke a stick at and this is the first batch of stuff to sell. There'll be more soon so if anybody is looking for gear that I dont have listed let me know and I'll tell you what else I have.

and you can now thin out some and add some in other areas... with a certain confidence

there is a trick though ...
you are going to sell somethings you will really regret and one day you are going to have to buy them back !

Modules ripe for racking.

I've got a few modules from an SSL5000 console. The SSL was a modular desk built for broadcast and film post work. Skywalker sound had the first one I believe though they have something else now. I'm getting a few modules racked and these are extras. I was told that they were tested and working before I bought them as a package but can't confirm as I haven't tested them myself. The ones I'm getting racked though were working out of the box so I assume that these are too. In excellent condition though a little dusty.

2x SSL501 Mic pres with 80db, +/-10db gain (so perhaps 90db overall!), -20db pad, variable hi/lo filters (hi down to 3k, low up to 350hz), direct output fader. Jensen input tx and transformer balanced out though I don't know what the transformer is.
like to sell as a pair but will split if there is enough interest. $550 for the pair. PENDING

4x SSL522 EQs. These are stereo 3 band eq supposedly based on the brown knob style. Sweepable frequency with hi q switch on mid band and shelf or peak on lo/hi bands. Put two of these into a rack and have four channels of SSL EQ for whatever you want. $225 per module or 400 for a pair. All SOLD

2x Ward Beck M462 EQs. Built on spec for the Canadian Broadcasting Commission WB stuff is excellent. These are about as flexible as an analog eq can get. 3 bands of fully parametric eq, overlapping bands of sweepable frequencies with sweepable Q controls(!). The high and low bands can be shelf or peak and the q control alters the curve of the shelf too! Runs on +/-25v so a jlm psu will power these easily. I racked two of these a while ago and used them alot but sold them when I got a rack with two comps and two eq's. very easy rack job. Clean modules but untested, I have one spare so if one of the units is faulty I will replace it with my spare. $400 for the pair.

Focusrite Green 4, stereo/dual mono VCA Compressor.

This is a full featured VCA comp with full time controls, sidechain hi/lo filters, soft/hard knee, auto release, stereo linking and an independent peak limiter with a look ahead function. It also has a switchable +4/-10db input. In fact I'm not sure what else you could expect as features on a solidstate compressor! I haven't used it at all other than plugging it in and twiddling the knobs to check that it worked and did what it said on the tin. $600

Hey Myles, are the SSL modules from a local desk or from O/S--Just curious, I used to work on the SSL5000 serial Number 1 when it was at Film Australia and I reckon I spent cumulatively 2 months of my life with that thing in bits.

They are from OS. From an English seller but I have no idea of their actual origin. So the desk at Film Australia was the first? I thought they were designed to a spec by skywalker sound. I'm sure your actual experience is far more valuable than my internet rambles... FA doesn't still have an SSL do they?

Not that I'm aware of, that part of FA was taken over by Soundfirm in the early 90s and The SSL and the big Harrison in Crystal Palace went with Soundfirm over to Moore Park (I think) The SSL was subsequently sold (Andy Stewart owned it at one stage)and I think it's in Melbourne at the moment. It was a bit of a dog . Film Australia blokes saw the prototype at a show in europe and ordered one and it was pretty well cobbled together asap. One SSL exec described it to me as the console for someone who doesn't know what they want.It used to overheat badly (Nearly as hot as an MCI 500) and the boards would flex and short out. We had to attach plastic insualtion sheets to the outer sides of the cassettes to prevent shorting.They used an interesting hybrid op amp chip , single in line pin module with 4 x 5534 SMD op amps potted in black gunk and cram these things onto the boards, some cassettes had multiple boards sandwiched together with 20 of these modules all jammed in.
One looks back fondly remembering those fun days sitting in a poorly lit cramped studio with an A800 to the right cursing at that F#@king desk that you'd just got one bit going again in time for another to crap out.......Rant Over now
