FS: Neumann KM 88i *rare*

Postby Ben M » Mon Apr 18, 2011 7:45 am

Hi everyone
For sale is my Neumann KM 88i microphone. A rare find for those Neumann lovers.

This mic is available in 12 days when I return to OZ from NYC. I want to give anyone who's interested time to put their finances together for this purchase.
I don't have a photo with me of my KM 88 but it's similar to the pic below. It is the XLR version (KM 88 i) as shown in the pic.
There is a lot of info on the web about these. Please do some research. These don't come up very often.
I've used this mic on various sources such as strings and acoustic guitar. It excels on stringed acoustic instruments. The KM 88 includes 3 selectable polar patterns (omni, cardiod and figure 8) and a 10db pad switch.
My KM 88 comes with the same neumann leather case as shown in the photo.
I will of course send the interested person/s a collection of photo's when I get back to OZ but you can count on it being in full operating order. I'm selling because I've spent lots of money upgrading to 2 new Symphony I/O's, new 8 core and Avid HD native card etc...
The mic is available now only to turtlerockers. Pm me if you'd like to buy it or if you have any questions.
$1650 - price is pretty firm

price is fair they come up for $1500-2500 when they surface - they are an unknown oddball to most people
the issues are the headshell ribs break , the nickel diaphram goes south the later can be fixed but there are a lot of mics around with broken headshell ribs :(
i had two for a long time , figured i would not need them for a few years while i sorted out the last studio build and as they are fairly unknown could buy them back easily
... wrong x 2

by the way i also think they are the ugliest mic neumann ever built ! X 10

general thought is neuman built them to get rid of their nos stock of kk56 nickle heads , i dont know how many were made but not thousands .
they were sold at the same time as the km 86 which also got hit with the ugly stick but it has the standard gold capsules of the time
(still a great mic )
there was a km 88 australian ebay about six months ago but this is the only other one i have seen for sale in that time

did i just make my own set km of 88 harder to buy back ...?
bugger

Ok so mine is one without the ribs at the head. Mine is a grill type head not with ribs just like the km56 (different to the pic). I believe they made 2 types of headshell's for the 88 -ribbed and grill style. Hmmm Sounds like a BBQ. mmmm BBQ.
I agree with rick it's not the most beautiful thing that neumann made but a wonderful mic for strings or any acoustic stringed instrument. It's most recent activity was a viola recording and it was just the ticket.

I wish I had a pic of it with me.....

not sure that is right looking at my neumann stuff
more likely the ribs broke and somebody found a kk54 head or whole assembly to swap on to it

even better in my books
i hate the way the ribbed head looks - luv the look of the km 56
nobody is going to complain

Just so everything's clear.... below is the type of head grill I'm twalkin bout. Remember these are pics from the interweb and not my actual mic. Purely for demonstration only. Damn I wish I had a photo of my mic with me.
Rick your probably right (I'm not going to debate neumann stuff with you- I will lose :) ) but isn't the km 88 a slightly slimmer mic to the km56 and therefore the headgrill a different size? I'm not a fan of the ribbed head look either.
Anyway headgrill on my mic looks like it was built for my mic (not some add on)

That one was PM'd to me yesterday by a TR member. It is perzackly like mine...but not mine. Mine is only available here on this forum.
So there you go....kk 56 head with a km 88i body. Nice snooping.
