Monitor amp options

Hello Trocaderos, I need some advice from the wise ones. I'm running Tannoy Ardens, Tannoy SRM 10b & dreaded NS-10 from a Niles speaker selector. I've been using a Pioneer MV-3000 power amp, but it's developed a fault. I've got a Perraux 3000b as a spare amp but it has unbalanced inputs. I use a Shadow Hills Equinox as monitor controller. I love it. It doesn't love unbalanced inputs. It produces a slight but annoying hum unless running into balanced inputs. This limits my choice of amps I can use with it. Is there a balancing (unbalancing) option available to me? I'd obviously like to colour the sound as little as possible. I'm also in the market for a Sydney tech to repair my Pioneer amp & general studio smeg. We seem to have a serious shortage of those who practice the fine art of mumbling at the circuits & burning the leaden incense. Have they all graduated to some higher calling? Or have we driven them all away with the late hours & later payment. Anybody out there? JIm Blackfoot

use a pair of 600:600 line transformers and balance the inputs of the amp. Easy.

Simple question, but worth a shot.

Is it possible that the hum is a simple ground loop? Have you tried different wiring combinations between the Shadow Hills and amp? Rane outlines a number of ways to do it, depending on whether the shadow hills unit has an output transformer in the monitoring path.

Hi Jim,
for good amps with balanced inputs that go nicely with the Tannoys, I've always liked the Brystons.
The perrauxs or any other Mosfet amps always sound a bit harsh compared to the Bryston or other good Bi-polar amps to my ears.
Other nice amps would be a QSC or if you can find a pair, some QUAD 50E monoblocks. These had a transformer input and (rare in a solid state amp) a transformer coupled output. designed for the BBC as I recall.They're virtually indestructible and can be tapped for any speaker/line impedance up to 200ohms.

The other good thing with any Bryston is the 20 Year Warranty (set from manufacturing date) I've got one from the 80's that only just ran out a couple of years ago., but it never stopped anyway.

For a tech Try Owen Reynolds (No relation) he's always a good bet around the studio
