Hey Rick

I've heard about them... even seen a picture of them... but never seen one alive and in captivity!

I think they're on a par with the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot.

I've got an F7 which I just love, and buried inside it is a Mono Synth which is really hard to program from the front panel as is all the Filter programs.

So if by chance you get offered a whole bunch of remotes, let me know as I might be interested in one.

Thanks

i have a bunch of the sony dps7 stuff
because basically are great sounding
but they are difficult to edit with ease and they are so cheap now i figure
oh well - one box one sound .. who cares

but if i can get a remote .. well anything is possible isnt it

i have seen them go on the net from time to time but never when i am in a position to grab it

sony professional ( ha remember them )
brought in about a dozen remotes so they are sitting around in cupboards just waiting to be turned on again
i am patient

I have the sony DSP remote, not selling it but I got to say it doesn't make editing any easier other than being on the desk, it just replicates the front panels exactly.

Still a total PITA. but yes great sounding units.

Thanks Adam - great tip!
I don't really need a remote that is a replica of what I am trying to avoid.
Take me of the "wanted" list
Still - if anyone has a m7 that they want to get rid of...................

Yeah but having a remote on top of the console sure beats squatting in front of the rack trying to dial in parameters.

For this reason, In the new place my main outboard gear will be in two racks on wheels so i can place them either side of my mix position, instead of having to turn my back to the monitors while adjusting any particulat bit of kit for the desired outcome. The rack behind the console is mainly for the patchbay, converters, etc.

rack behind you ...?
what madness is this !

i think somebody did it in the 70" and took a photo
word spread like chinese whispers studio atfer studio until that is how people design studios

"oh maybe stick the musicians behind the rack against the wall where it sounds shitty if they really must hang around while we work on their music "

"the holy engineer needs to be able to turn around with his back to the speakers and adjust the sound quickly "

i am not having a backward rack ever again

and for the first time in my life technology is probably with me :)

well if i can ever find some remotes 1

All my gear is built into the desk I work at so all gear is easily accessible for tweaking and for metering. I know its not the biggest setup but it works very well and looks great too. I do remember seeing a studio photo a while back where all the outboard was mounted in racks in the ceiling above the console and looking very much a like 70's spaceship.

Yeah - rack behind + couch behind = always crap
The racks always end up with more outboard on them because techs always suggest in the build that this is where the extra patch points for outboard should be - so one ends up with a wall worsening the (already crap) couch perspective.
2 setups like this off the top of my head are Electric Ave (RIP) and The Grove (and thousands of others too)
Both great rooms to mix in but horrible to sit on the couch.
It sounds shit for the client on the couch - but worst of all, such valuable control room real estate wasted on a rack and a boom boom hole to sit in
its so nice to stand back as far as one can in the center position - and have a raised couch there, for the lonely nights when you are mixing or mastering and you want to sit back on the couch and have a good listen.
Ive never seen a mastering room with the rear rack in front of the couch setup - I wonder why?
There are way too many sheep in this industry.
The internet has really helped turn engineers, producers and mixers into sheep and parrots.
And people are worried about genetic engineering? - I'm more worried about generic engineering.

Those of you with a greater sense of history might comment, but I wondered whether it began when consoles started getting longer than a B-double. It'd be a long way to roll to either side and maybe it's better in the sweet spot even with your back turned.

Ive heard many years ago that a lot of acoustic designers use the rear rack, and raised floor as a way to dissapate the very low frequency's
Apparently it makes their job much easier, and that is the main reason they are still used in control room design
Maybe Mark can chime in here and confirm if this is so?

The type of studio design that we are talking about was happening well before the internet was popular.

personally I happen to like having the musicians sitting as far away from me as possible, I would put up a sound and smell proof wall if I could, perhaps an electric fence as well.

Another type of popular design was where the back of the room was just behind the engineers, the client area was in front of the console, usually a step down. Allen Eaton's for example.

In the new place, the couch is at the back wall which is a floor to ceiling diffuser and it sounds just fine there especially when the 15inch tannoy golds are wound up a bit. There are also a few extra chairs dotted about and two extra on wheels for whoever it might be in the band who is putting their two bobs worth into the mix.

there was a new york studio i cannot place right now that used the roof above the console to hold all their outboard gear like a 747 cockpit
the thing that made me smile was once seeing a photo of aussie engineer timmy kramer (rip) standing on a milkcrate trying to get high enough to twiddle the knobs !

there is no great solution except less gear , remotes
and "in the box" which is just a "remote" anyway

my new place has machine rooms and side racks , which is also less then ideal
but later on when i move my mastering stuff out of there into the big room
i am going to need those remotes for the first room
so lock it away in your memory banks

Hey Rick do you know if you can use one remote to control a number of different dps7 units.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I seem to remember that was a feature, then again I might be thinking of the Lexicon MRC.

yeah one remote will control up to ten (different units ) of them at once i believe

i have a pile of things to get remotes for
i rebuilt the 224 xl remote i have a while ago which was a pain but well worth it
and usually in studios i have had - you just dont have room for remotes
but because all that old digital stuff is so cheap and basically obsolete now
this next studio i will have the remotes !
will i actually use them ..? .. dunno

i need an m5000 atac remote as well
and a z systems digital router remote for a 36 x 36 aes switcher while we are at it

yes it can, you set each DSP on a different "channel" and the remote has channel select button then scans through them.

and indeed the MRC had the same feature.

Call me naive, but do these outboard get control via midi?
If so, could you get a nice bit of software or generic midi GUI running on an iPad or something to control em?
Just a thought.
I guess if possible, it would be handy controlling a range of outboard wirelessly from an iPad etc.

the MRC was midi, but the Sony DSP remote is 9 pin dsub. the sonys do have midi however, would need to look at the manual to see if all the parameters for each algorithm are controllable.

Digital Performer has that capability built-in, it can control any midi device. You can build your own hardware interface and there are also many preset devices. I'm sure there'll be something like that for ipad or even just a standalone software for the mac.

We better stop talking about them before the price goes back up and people
think they might actually be useful
i paid $78 including postage for a d7
it has at least four amazing sounds in it that i have never heard
anywhere else but could imagine using and i plugged one of mine into my guitar the other night
and noodled away for hours
in contrast i used the really tweakable
line 6 echo pro i have for about 10 mins and got bored
the line 6 presets are ok but...
With the dps 7 stuff well
whats not to love

Oh yes they are a pain to edit !

It took me too long to find that thing to sell it now. Interestingly I had all the dsp's at one stage, but never the remote until much later.

Now I only have the D7 and M7 left. the R7 I sold to buy a 224X many years ago, not that I don't love the 224X, but miss the R7 now, will get another one, one day.

The F7 I sold to buy a TC fireworx, and hated that, miss the F7 now too, it has some cool stuff, at the time I had a (perhaps unjustified) problem with a EQ/filter being digital and only analog will do, now I could care less, whatever sounds cool.

another great sounding/powerful but cheap overlooked unit is the Digitech TS24.

but honestly I have the most fun playing with the Eventides.

ok none of your post is good news but my thoughts on the last bit was

"dont tell me that.. i dont want my brain to know that "

when had a h3000 way back when they costed the earth i always felt guilty that with all those sounds and all that money that i still just set them to be a chorus or a flanger

but know they are virtually obsolete i have been eyeing them off again
but i have been telling myself you didnt really use them then
you will not really use them later
stop looking at them !

your a bad man adam
