2 sets of speakers 1 sub....

i have a pain in the b*m monitoring issue, can anyone help.

we have a control 24 (not the issue) connected to 2 sets of monitors. geneles off the main, and ns10 off the second.
we have a mono sub connected to the genelecs, but want to use this sub with the yamaha's as well.....

is there a monotor thingy that lets you use speaker a or b with sub (with a sub level would be great).

when we had the d8b i used a different feed for the sub and it worked well. the ctrl24 isnt a mixer, so it doesnt have many audio paths. the aux out is feeding headphones, so we cant use that (we do want cans and sub at the same time)...

any sugestions....

also, any comments on dynaudio monotors..air 20 or BM15a..

ournew control room is larger than our current monitors will be happy with.

Depends on whether the sub has L/R outs and (if so) whether or not you want to use the sub's crossover.

there might be a couple of solutions depending on how you run the sub

if you simply run it in parallel with the main monitors, ie don't run your audio through the sub to cross it over, then :

you could take a feed off the main and secondary through say 10K resistors on each to mix together both feeds. Then send this on to the sub.
note, this will rely on the control 24 shorting out the output NOT selected in order to avoid audio bleeding back through the mixing resistors to the non selected monitors. Also there will be some level loss that you will need to correct for on the sub.

or

a separate monitor select switch box that handles the sub correctly in the first place

i tried to do a parralel thing through my patch bay, but both a & b outs went to both speakers (as expected, its parallel)

wouldnt the 10k resistor thing be the same? there is nothing to stop the signal feeding from speaker a to b.

rob, how much would a unit like this cost, with a seperate level control for the sub.

it is the 10K resistors that make all the difference!

effectively summing the main and secondary outputs together for sending to the sub, so when either is driven you still get a signal to the sub

whilst the main and secondary outputs picked off before the 10K resistors drive the two sets of monitors.

note this does require the deselected output to be shorted out within the control 24 to prevent crosstalk as mentioned. Your results with the patchbay experiment tend to suggest that the control 24 doesn't short the deselected output.


recently i built a totally passive controller with two inputs, one output, stereo/mono switch, mute switch and incorporating a very high quality stereo volume control. These type of things aren't that expensive or complicated, often its just the right ingredients and the presentation.
