I want to borrow your attenuators

I have just taken possession of a minty Fred Forssell SMP-2 dual mic pre and want to try it in my Mastering chain.
and want to drive it round my block (stop it from clipping @ line level;).

So to give it its best chance of a long life of looking pretty in my chain,
I'm hoping to borrow someones XLR line attenuator pads. (inline or rack)
just to see if it stays or if it goes. (I only do post)

-10db doesn't cut it. i need - 20ish i think

Can't you just make some XLR - XLR pads?.. probably about the 2nd easiest thing to solder up.

Hey Rob, great article as always..
If my signal is line level, What would be the optimum db setting for the pads.
I noted that you have some 40db's for this type of signal.

Also, this is for mastering not tracking, so I'm looking for zero impact upon the signal (apart from volume).

Why would you put a mic pre in a mastering chain? Even a really clean one like the Forssell?

40dB should be fine. But as Mark said why would you want to drop a line level through a fairly straight mic preamp in a mastering chain? On the flipside however there are NO RULES, so go for it.
