SSL MadiXtreme 64 + AlphaLink MADI-AX on Windows 7 64Bit

Postby DwaneHollands » Fri Oct 21, 2011 5:55 pm

Has anyone successfully installed an SSL Madixtreme 64 card with an Alphalink MADI-AX on Windows 7 64Bit?

I stuffed up the install I think. Manual said install driver first, then put card in. But the CD didn't have the drivers on it so I downloaded it from the SSL website. But I've since discovered that you're meant to put the card in first, then wait for Windows to discover it and then point it to the downloaded drivers.

However, simply un-installing the drivers in device manager in windows 7 doesn't actually delete the driver. So when I do a Cold Re-boot it finds the driver immediately without needing to re-install.

It APPEARS to be working - apart from the meters not working or audio being passed - apart from that. It seems to show up in Reaper and play back - no audio - but it doesn't complain etc.

Anyway, just seeing if anyone has had any luck with installing this. Perhaps I need to edit my registry to get it back to driverless mode. <biting fist>. I'm sure it's all going to be fun.

Yeah, I've got a support email with SSL at the moment. Waiting on reply. Just thought I'd tap on the Turtlerock Think Tank.

You mean you didn't create a restore point before you did the installation? naughty!!

If you want to uninstall it completely you should be able to do that as long as the card is still fitted to the board when you run the uninstall app - then shut down - then remove the card - then power back up. I had a similar problem with a Delta 1010 card - could not remove the control panel until the card was inserted back into the board (pain in THE neck).....

I'm running one on Win 7 64 bit Dwayne. It works great. Is it new or did you have it running on an older system?
The patching is pretty tricky on them. You need to patch your analog inputs to the MADI and your MADI to the analog outputs. Have you done that? I'm not at the studio today (I've developed an allergy to working) but from memory you need to press the output button till ANA lights, then while holding that in press the input till MADI lights. Same with input, you press the output button till MADI lights, then while holding it in you press the input button till ANA lights. I think. You might not need to hold the output button in while you select the input, I can't remember for sure.

BUT there's a catch with the default setup - you need to check what outputs you have assigned as the main monitor out for Reaper. The SSL defaults to the first 24 outs as ADAT, so if you have selected output pair 1-2 for Reaper's output, by default it will be coming out channel 1 and 2 of the first ADAT group. So, you either have to select channel 25-26 as the output for Reaper, which by default will come out analog outs 1 & 2 on the Alphalink Dsubs, OR you have to change the setup so the first 24 outs/ins are the analog ones instead of the ADAT. TO do this you use a combination of the buttons that I really can't remember but it is in the manual. Something like you hold CLOCK in while you turn the power on then use other buttons to go through menus and the channel lights change colour to indicate what mode the unit is in.

I'm at the studio tomorrow, so if you have no luck we can either email or talk on the phone and I can walk you through it when I'm in front of mine.
Good luck.
Cheers.

careful in your registry there dwayne if you dont know what you're doing 100%. generally i like to limit my poking around in there to changing number values only for lag and delay times, and also boot up time.

i would do an uninstall with a program like Auslogics Boost Speed, and make sure the program is wiped, and start all over, it will look after deleting the drivers from your registry as well.

Hi Guys,

Sorry it's been ages. Life's been pretty crazy of late.

I did finally get it up and running! I can get audio in and out. It was that patching of Madi to Analog and vice versa. It also outputs the master buss from reaper through 23/24 analog outputs.

I've tried to run some audio through some outboard (api 512c), but I'm getting a lot of noise. I know the API aren't slient, but I think this is more than normal. I've just re-cabled my studio and I'm running all my devices from two power boards (6x each power board) so it might be the power situation I think.

Play back from virtual instruments is pristine through the monitors. So it might be a power issue or something.
