Lion Don't Do iT
A month ago I up-graded from Snow Leopard to Lion, then I bought the Duet 2 running with Logic9. OMG what a mess, the Duet worked when it felt like it, had to WUP Waves again, upgrade other pluggers (some still didn't work properly).
I had enough so I reformatted the HD, went back to Snow Leopard, reinstalled all my plugins and other apps.
24hrs later I was up and running again with stability.
Gee why don't the software companies work together at the same time or should I say Apple get it together especially with Apogee.

Re: Lion Don't Do iT
I've heard this a few times... I've been running lion for about 3 weeks and it has been clean sailing for me. The only issue I have had was the late-to-be-released apogee ensemble drivers.
Did you go a clean install a lion nic? Or an upgrade of snow-leopard?

I did the upgrade but all is good after I did reinstall of Snow. Apogee now have the non beta drivers for Lion but I think Ill stay with Snow Leopard for now.

Upgrading from one to another has always been a little fickle with audio in my experience. New clean installations are the way to go.

New MBP running Lion with PT9 + Wavelab 7 - all installed and running well. First boot of PT9 and the app hung but it allowed me to shutdown and reboot and all is sweet now.

Re: Lion Don't Do iT
See above Nathan - my installation is the PTHD9 package, and it reads PTHD9 when it boots - though I believe that the functionality is PT9 + CPTK as I don't have an HD core card.
Overall I'm really impressed with the performance of PT9 on Lion - it kills my W7 / 8-core / 12GB PC - faster startup (8 seconds compared to 30) and all the config options are clearly described and work smoothly. I'm getting 32 I/O over firewire from my DM desk, remote control etc etc.

Re: Lion Don't Do iT
As much as I like Mac OS, their new paradigm of not providing any form of Lion OS install disks with new computers is appalling. If your drive fails or if you replace your drive your machine is bricked unless you have broadband and a spare 4Gb of bandwidth to download the OS, and having tried it and finding that it doesn't work, I would suggest avoiding Lion altogether for professional applications and staying with Snow Leopard. Apple will be selling a very expensive thumb drive with a Lion installer, what a rip off. They do provide a recovery partition on the drive that can re-install Lion, fat lot of use a recovery partition is if the drive fails. Looks like Snow Leopard is the last version of Mac OS that is not consumer bloatware.

Re: Lion Don't Do iT
Further to my last post, here is a link to an app called "Lion Disk Maker". If you download Lion from the App store but DON'T install it it will appear in your applications folder. (If you go to your App Store "purchased" menu and it says that Lion is already installed, hold down the option key and click on "install" and it will allow you to download it again).
Then run Lion Disk Maker and use it to create either a bootable Lion DVD or install it as a bootable volume on a thumb drive or external hard drive.

You can do this directly in Lion (or any version of OSx for that matter) using Disk Utility.
The new OS format has certainly caused a stir. Originally I was concerned... till I remembered my mac doesn't have a CD drive!! I have personally embraced it. Once I setup my system with all my applications, plugins, samples (on a partition), etc I simply cloned my entire system twice to two replacement harddrives.
...I now have my sanity for the sake of $140 extra bucks. In the event that my system does die, I can pull out the old drive and stick in a new drive. BAM! System with all programs (and the OS recovery app) back up and running in minutes. OSx's time machine takes care of the session backups from the previous (now dead) system.
No doubt, if Lion did come on a CD I'd probably spend at least 8 hours getting my system back the way it is by re-downloading software, updates, drivers, etc, etc, etc... With no install CD's I've come up with a better solution. So much better!!

The cloning of disks is something that I learned about the hard way with PT and PC's... Though I've had almost no issues with OSX I clone anyway.. and often. I cannot stress enough how important it is.. (and how much time you can save if you have issues later on).

Re: Lion Don't Do iT
If they just gave us the option to mirror our O/S HD the problems would be solved - unlikely you would have 2 disks fail and be forced to the download option.

Re: Lion Don't Do iT
Are you sure you can't do that? While it isn't possible to create a RAID 1 using the two harddrives in the mac mini server, it is still certainly possible to do it. You do need to access "terminal" via the remote install utility though.

Re: Lion Don't Do iT
Don't forget too that to install Lion onto a backup drive or thumb drive from the App Store download the destination drive has to already have Leopard installed.

Good points, Apple is forcing us to keep good full backups of everything on separate hard drives which I guess is a good behaviour to enforce. Is the end of optical drives in laptops near? They take up lots of space that could hold much better things (such as bigger batteries). Apple has a habit of forcing technological evolution onto it's users, for example USB was a dead format invented by Microsoft and Intel that never caught on in PC land, but when Apple removed serial ports from the first iMacs and made them USB only there was a big outcry, but it launched USB to where it is today.

Re: Lion Don't Do iT
The Apple idea is to move you off local storage and in to "the cloud". By removing the opticsl device,
which you can still buy as a peripheral, they are urging the user to rely on wifi and cloud services for software
and data. Personally, I like my software and data under my own control, but prefer Macs to most other computers
really so I work around it, as much as I can....

Re: Lion Don't Do iT
This has been good info eveyone.
i'm going to wait a while before entering the Lion's cage. Get the teething issues out of the way. Sounds like I need to block out a few days just to make sure things go smoothly.
Cheers

Hi Nath - not sure what you mean with the double negative? RAID 1 is what I'd prefer - do you mean that there's a way to do that?
Thanks Angus for the Super Duper link - that's a really good next best thing option

Oh dear. What I meant was... while it isn't possible to create a Raid 1 with DISK UTILITY on a mini mac server, it is actually still possible to implement. The mini mac server comes with two hard drives internally though, which is super handy for this purpose.
Google "Mac mini server RAID1" and you will see a bunch of info on how to do it.

Thankyou sir - I shall chase that. My MacMini server (with 2 x 750GB HDs) is due later this week so I want to set it up from scratch.
On the thread topic - Lion is working really well here - postie just delivered an OWC mini firewire drive for the MBP - plugged it in / mounted up perfectly in seconds. I can't believe how easy it has been since going all Mac compared to the winDoh!s that I've been fighting with as DAWs for the last few years.

And another update - MacMini srv arrived this morning and is now up and running doing it's first mix session with Lion and PT9.0.5. A copybook installation and setup - just so good!
