Saw Stevie Nicks concert last night

I know what you're saying.... and yes, I went because my Mrs likes her... ;-)

But she put on a good performance - esp. when you consider Ms Nicks is 63. Times have changed - when I was a lad (generally) musicians packed up their traps and gave the game away long before reaching that age - it's good to see that there's life after 60.

But to the audio side of it - the band (9 + Stevie) was tight - there were no show-offs and they played the support role well and enjoyed themselves judging by the smiling faces - and scarcely a fluffed note all night. Wollongong ent. cent. was the venue - first time I've been there and, I'd describe it like a smaller version of Sydney ent. cent. - a bit better than average acoustically but a bit woolly in the middle / a tiny bit lacking in top end. We were in the 5th row and I'd say the levels were perfect - for the first time in years we didn't need earplugs (we did have them with us of course). I'd guess it was the house PA - flying arrays either side of the stage and a pair of what used to be called big quad boxes on the floor either side of the stage. Perspex screens around the drummer and percussionist - MD421s on the toms and I think an Audix on the BD - pair of pencil overheads.... but I forgot the binoculars so I can't tell you the brand/model. Previous times I've seen F/wood Mac they used MD441s for vocals but this time she had an Audix-like mic that was fairly sensitive (i.e. she didn't have to swallow it like a Shure) and still gave that "reedy" sound to her vocals (lots of 'verb and delays to make it "bigger"). IEMs all-round for the band - it's looking more like the days of stage foldback are dying. And a smack on the wrist for the mixer - he had the mic level pulled down before the encore (1 song....) and didn't get it up in time so Stevie was mouthing away for 10 seconds introducing the encore song..... not good.

The eeriest thing was the crowd - they sang along on a number of the songs!! Just softly and without any prompting from Stevie - it was a really strange feeling having all that chorus of voices filling the hall.

Dave Stewart was the support band and they were also good - the singer was very good but it's a hard act to fill Annie Lennox' shoes - she has such a distinctive voice and you come to expect it in their "offkey" songs. There was too much bottom end in their mix and it was creating a standing wave at ground level and they were louder than the main band. Whatever happened to the days when the support band got 4 channels and the compressor cranked to 4:1? I can remember hearing a fellow mixer back in the 70s being told not to touch the compressor or any of the other channels under threat of broken fingers.....

Next time I think I'll go to Sydney though - it just felt a bit too much like being in Deliverance there........ :ymcowboy:

Ah yes, I have fond memories of being loudly ignored by 30,000 people. In the States in the early 90's they didn't even turn off the hall lighting for the support act. There was one gig we did where they didn't even use FOH and all the audience heard was sidefill.

Back on topic - Stevie is old-school and a road-hardened veteran. Delighted to hear she is still knocking it out. I've never met her but I knew some guys who had worked with her and they all spoke of her very highly.

Ok...two degrees of separation here ,
For the last six months I've been working with Dennis Dunstan(drummer) who was in theMac for over 20 years in various capacities. (security, road manager, cover designer etc)
I think he even was live in security in Stevies' house for a few months.
Some of the Mac stories he tells .....!!

hmmmm Well the missus and I went and saw Grinderman thursday night ... possibly that is as removed from Stevie Nicks as you can get! But still those guys are all pushing their mid fifties and it is assuring to see them not only trotting it out but still pushing the envelope. Nick Cave has learnt to work with the constaints of his vocal range and while the performance aggression is tempered by middle age he still works hard and is fun to watch. Of course Marty plays bass like a machine and Jim squeezes out tricky yet trobbing drum patterns. Then there is Warren Ellis .... who knows what this mad genius is doing .... rarely is there any seeming relationship between what he seems to be playing and what is coming out of his amp ... hell .. half the time he is making a huge racket without playing anything!
The sound, the mix?. Dunno, it was loud, the PA fed out at 40 Hz for about a minute during the last song . but I don't care care too much anymore, so long as there is a performance, its fun and it's interesting. All boxes ticked by Grinderman.

Interesting to find a write up of this show here. Great to hear Ian and his lady had a great night out.

I was the Australian monitor tech for this tour and thought I would provide a bit of info/clarification for those interested.

Stevie came with some American audio crew, supplied by Clair Bros. They carried their own production with regard to all stage, Monitors and FOH equipment. Monitors were a mix of IEM and Clair cabinets (12AM and ML18) Driven by a Digidesign Profile. Pretty sure the FOH console was a Yamaha PM5000.
The PA for the tour was supplied locally by JPJ audio along with three Australian crew. The Main stacks consisted of L'Acoustics V-Dosc cabinets with dV-Dosc under-hangs, the side hangs (out-fills) were dV-dosc flown beneath dV-Subs. The ground components were SB-218 Subs with Arcs and dV-Dosc as front and lip fill. System drive was Dolby Lake. This system was used for all ten shows of this tour (no house PA rigs) with the side hangs being used as delay stacks for the first show at the SMMB. Yep, we really cart all that stuff around, set it up and pack it down each gig... Consistency is the key here (I'm not all that old, but to me quadboxes usually refer to guitar cabinets).

Having produced Stevie's album, Dave Stewart was by no means just another support act (Besides I wouldn't really like to try and do a 10 piece band with 4 lines). JPJ audio supplied the equipment for Dave and his band, which consisted of a PM5D monitor console, Clair Bros. 12AM wedges, ML18 drumsub and 4 sends of Sennheiser IEM. Basically the band were on wedges, Dave and the BVs were on ears. A PM5D was also used for FOH (using separate consoles negates the need for breaking fingers ;) ). I think the bottom heavy sound might have been the bass rig coming directly off stage. I remember the FOH engineer grumbling about this a few times, and none was needed in the mix (and hey, he was up the back).

Dealing each day mainly with Flying the PA and getting the Dave Stewart part of the gig done, I didn't have much to do with Stevie's stage kit, though from memory i think her vocal mic was Sennhieser, Perhaps an e945.

I don't remember too much about the Wollongong gig specifically, except not having time to visit the Brewery next door, or the beach across the road.
