This forum is getting way too analog, so lets jump forward in time a bit.
8 channel 24 bit 44.1KHz balanced +4 to ADAT optical, strong preference for no preamps (or at least preamps that can be hacked out of the way).
What do people suggest as good, what should be avoided?
I'm really looking at the AD side, any DA is a bonus but not really required.
Nick, what do you use for all those 01V96 ADAT channels?
Thanks for any suggestions, folks.

I have just added a Metric Halo i/o to my 002 based rig. The difference is larger than i thought it was going to be! Is now used for monitoring and is a noticeable improvement. And a reasonably priced addition which can also be used with a laptop for outside work. Haven't tried the pre's yet, still getting to know my new JLM BA's qaud rack ;-)

Apogee Rosetta 800 with firewire, I've been using the 200 with firewire for about a year now and never 1 hiccup, touch wood. I bought the Rosetta 800 last week, though I hav'nt got it running with firewire yet, though it will be in the future, at the moment it's being fed by an RME hdsp 9652 (24 adat i/o) 16 channels to my mixer and 8 channels to the apogee, which can also be routed to feed channels 17 - 24 on the mixer. They are expensive, though well worth it.
Out of the box you get 8 channels of adat i/o, 8 aes i/o, 8 analog i/o ,So with the firewire option you can send to and from nearly any device with ease.
Maybe even an RME fireface or the like, could be what your after.
1 unit to avoid would be the motu 828, they are usefull with lots of features but the conversion quality is not very good.

ditto with the 828. I still use mine for getting demo's down on the laptop... but conversion quality is crap!!!!! I only use it in the studio to get the ADAT outs from my desk in via firewire.

Sorry Chris didn't read this till now.
I actually just sold the 01V96. It was kind of a waste because I only used it for play-back and HUI.
