Foam where to buy?

Hi all got a few walls to cover at a school was curious if there's any places that sell foam that aren't retail outlets charging $1 for 10cm.

Any hints would be appreciated!

Tontine acousticsorb 1 is a good subsitute for

Ah yes good point. You still see enough of it in studios so i assumed it was ok if you get the right stuff!

If you must use foam... Pacific Dunlop is your best bet... make sure you get an open cell foam.

But I'd suggest you use a Tontine product called Acousti-Panel.

25mm high density board which is self supportive and comes in a 1200 x 2400mm sheet.

Has an NRC of 0.8 and is basically 100% absorptive from 1000Hz up.

Has a Ignitability Index of 0 and zero spread of flame.

Is made from recycled products.

If it's for a school you end up with walls you can use as pin boards.

Works out about $115 + GST per 1200 x 2400 sheet, thats about $40 + GST per square metre.

For an extra $35 per sheet you can have it fabric wrapped.

You can also get it in 12mm & 50mm thickness.

It's an excellent product for a quick and easy install to tame the liveness in a room.

For studio use the 50mm board spaced out from a wall 100mm will dramatically improve it's low frequency absorption. The 50mm board has an NRC of 1.0

As it's self supportive it's excellent to deaden a live room... just carry the panels in... lean them up against the wall and start recording.

And finally I have nothing to do with this company, I just think when a good product comes along every one should know about it.

Hey Rick forget the the Acoustisorb... go for Acousti-Panel, you don't need any framing to support it and you can get it fabric wrapped. Too easy.

I did some unscientific test between meo245 foam and the thin acoustisorb
In framed panels
I couldnt tell the difference except the price !

The self supporting stuff looks interesting if its wrapped
I better look into it myself !

I have a hall to treat in the near future and this is timely info guys.
Couple of questions for you;
- How rigid is the 50mm acousti-panel? Does it stand up stiff with no support? Flop around? Just trying to get an idea of it's rigidity and weight?
- I'd also be interested to know what technique you find best for mounting off the wall 100mm. Is there a particular detail that you use and have found cool for unframed applications?

Definitely like to use something like this (cloth wrapped) for a number of areas in the hall..... the size, efficiency and ease of install are kinda ideal.

I finally found the data sheet for the 25 and 50mm. Semi rigid sort of explains it's rigidity but I'd like to know more about the pitfalls of mounting Tontine acousti-panel on walls in public spaces. What happens when you press your finger into it like a child would? Does it bounce back or are you left with a permanent dint. Greg you mentioned using it as a pin board, that could be a very useful bonus for me for this multi purpose space.
I'll investigate getting a sheet as a sample but any extra info from people who have used acoustic-panel would be much appreciated.

The Acousti-Panel is made up of 2 different density boards. The face layer is approximately 6mm thick and is a high density semi rigid polyester. This is then bonded to a medium density polyester, something similar to an Acoustisorb 3,

How rigid is the 50mm acousti-panel? Does it stand up stiff with no support? Flop around? Just trying to get an idea of it's rigidity and weight?

Both the 25mm and 50mm are self supportive, you can stand them up on their own and they won't bend or fold under their own weight.

2500 x 1200 x 25mm is aprroximately 9kg

2500 x 1200 x 50mm is aprroximately 12.5kg

What happens when you press your finger into it like a child would? Does it bounce back or are you left with a permanent dint.

If you were to adhere a 25mm Acoust-Panel to a wall, kids could bounce off it without doing any damage to it. It does compress but has good recovery. Push your thumb into it as hard as you can and you will leave a slight indentation, maybe 1 to 2mm.

If you are just treating a hallway, to kill the liveness, then the 25mm fixed directly to the wall will do the job.

You can fix it directly to wall with either an adhesive or capped screws.

I'd also be interested to know what technique you find best for mounting off the wall 100mm.

If you want to extend the absorption below 500hz then mount it on 75-100mm battens on 300mm centres if it's in an area where people are going to be leaning against the walls.
If it's in a low traffic area then 600mm centres will suffice. Above head height it will only need support around the perimeter.

United Bonded have an upholstery service where they will fabric wrap a board for $35 plus fabric. Keep in mind that charge is for any size up to a full 1200 x 2400 board. So if you just want a 300 x 600 piece fabric wrapped it will still cost you $35.

You can DIY. The fabric is attached to the board with a Scotch spray adhesive. The hardest part is getting a neat mitre on the corners.

If your going to mount it in any kind of frame, or put dress strips over where one board meets the next, then you only need to adhere the fabric to the face of the board and that's easy.

using it as a pin board, that could be a very useful bonus for me for this multi purpose space.

I just put a picture hook into the face of it, the type where the nail angles back down, and then hung a 1kg picture off it, no problem.

The hall is an old country hall with some big woody refections. This sounds like a good product for some of the ceiling and walls.

A good friend of mine has this product http://autex.com.au/products/Wall-Cover ... pace/Panel installed in his restaurant and it does a great job reducing reflections in the space. I believe the Quietspace panels are more expensive but they look really great how he's used them. Here's a pic of them in his restaurant - they hang pictures from it as well.

I think the Autex Quiet Space is a similar product to the Acousti-Panel but not as dense.

Autex make their own versions of the Tontine Acoustic products and are competitively priced but make sure your getting the same density for the same given thickness.

Before making a decision, get sample from both companies, then cut them to the same size and then weigh them.

This also allows you to check the product against it's specification. These products are usually spec'd in grams per square meter. So multiply the length by the width of the sample in mm, then divide the result into 1,000,000. Now multiply that result by the sample weight in grams and that will give you the weight per square metre.

I received a sample a couple of days ago with the price sheet.
For the 50mm acousti-panel (nude) 4300gsm 2800x1220mm = $135
50mm acousti-panel (with fabric face) 4300gsm 2400x1220 = $207 or approx $72 m2
