I just got an email, from CD BABY, saying that SoundExchange have royalties owing to me.

Well, its certainly better than me owing them....8)


I am going to ring APRA this morning and see, whats what, and if APRA know anything about it.


Has anyone here, gone through the process of registering with Sound Exchange? www.soundexchange.com


It seems its an entity that collects royalties....I wonder if APRA already have an existing arrangement with them, and if not, why not.

Part of the sign up process, involves sending a scan of your drivers license, and filling out a US tax form.....which just rings alarm bells for me.....

Hi Peter, do you know what works the royalties are for, and are they registered with APRA?
I'm not saying Sound Exchange is suss or anything, but their requirements for payment if you are outside the US are pretty odd. Bank details I can understand, but sending a void cheque? DO people even own cheque books anymore?
And US tax form - wtf?
(EDIT) Actually I just checked a bunch of royalty statements and tax is deducted on my US royalties, although only tiny amounts in the cents.. They are deducted from a bunch of other countries too. My US ones are with ASCAP, but I've never filled out a US tax form.

Mind you the US is like that, some of the hoops I have to jump through to get my screen royalties from ASCAP are odd too. Still, I don't see why if they are a royalty collecting agency they wouldn't onpay through APRA here. Call writer services at APRA, they will know how best to proceed.

Well, firstly SoundExchange is a legitimate entity. Its not a scam (well, at least its not like one of those nigerian scams...8)...)

I spoke to APRA who referred me to the PPCA (an entity I didn't know existed)

The PPCA collects royalties, for the sound recording copyright, for broadcast.

I thought, APRA handled this. Didn't know anything about the PPCA, you have to join, which I am going to.


PPCA and sound exchange are having some contact with each other, but are not affiliated.

They are discussing with Sound Exchange, the registration requirements regards a void'd cheque.

I don't really know if any of this will be worth while, as Sound Exchange collects for Internet broadcast and cable TV, Satellite Radio etc.... I already have royalties coming in from things like Last.Fm and Spotify, and man, one day I will be able to buy a cup of coffee, the rates are very ...very...low.

Anyways....I will update this post with anything else I find.

Would love to hear from anyone who went through the process to join Sound Exchange and or PPCA.

ggggrrrrr dont get me started re ppca and the like... have a REALLY good read in both areas, paying (being a member) how they collect and most importantly who/how they pay....

chances are if you join, and they collect on you behalf, unless you have a radio hit (and they believe you have charted in the correct column) you may not receive what you expect.

i have had this discussion with many name entertainers in aussie, with many hits and none of them are aware of ever receiving any ppca payments..

i am aware of managers who have received payment though.

like most collection agency's, the concept is sound. just make sure you understand what you think you are getting. and look at who owns the ppca.
