Cutting Acoustisorb

Excuse me if this has been covered (I've searched & not come up with exact matches...).

I have been cutting my Acoustisorb with an angle grinder, which scares the crap out of me.

Any safer alternatives to cutting it?

A sharpened machete can be a good tool for cutting insulation and should work well for acousticsorb. Just swap one dangerous tool for another.

go and buy a electric carving knife from kmart
hopefully by the time its blunt , your done

after many years using an 18 century millers pair of scissors which are razor sharp and great but hard work
i watched a guy with a electronic carving knife .. i fell to my knees and cried

now last week of coarse i was looking at my large industrial bandsaw sideways and thought ...i wonder

band saw is the ultimate way to do it ... but we dont all have band saw do we ?

i believe there is a circular saw blade now made for the job as well - check with tontine

but angle grinder ..? deary me

I made 22 four inch bass traps out of acoustics orb using an angle grinder....and I still have ten fingers.....was a horrible scary job....and one I never wnt to do again...8)

go to china town / your nearest asian grocer and buy a Kiwi brand meat knife (pics http://importfood.com/thai_knives.html ).

Get a good blade sharpener.

I have a couple of these things as they're great cheap kitchen tools and can be honed to a razor sharp edge + they cut through Tontine acousticsorb 3 like butter.

I did loads of it with a (sharp) Stanley Knife and a straight edge on the floor - one pass through halfway - and the second pass gets through. Fast and easy - and an accurate cut

Yeah +1 on that recommendation Chris.

Important part is a new blade in the Stanley knife.

If you're cutting the really thick stuff then you might be better to get a professional box cutter knife.

Put weight on the straight edge so you compress the Acoustisorb... makes it easier to cut but make sure you keep your fingers out of the way.

Another option is to make yourself a hot wire cutter... works like a hot knife thru butter.

well, i tried everything I had around me....it was such a mother to cut.

So, I went (oh oh oh ...Tim Allen noise) Angle Grinder!!! 8)

The first cut, I melted the acoustisorb.....the second it wrapped around the shaft...

By the time I was finished I was a dab hand...very very tired....and me and the room were covered in shit. 8)


The traps came out well, and the room sounds good, so I guess it was worth it....still though, if I had a bucketload of cash, those real traps ones look easy to work with...8)...and probably require very little angle grinding...8)
