Is it an actual SSL or SSL clone? That's mighty cheap if it's an SSL one. Noice.

Quote from DIY thread

'You forgot that he also blackmailed Joe from JLM into giving him the layout of one of his products. He threatened that he will find out it anyway and then share it with everyone to ruin joe's business. It just doesn't get any lower than this.'

Another quote from the GDIY thread... (from our very own Sammas I believe.)
http://www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic ... #msg194444

The post is dated July 01, 2006 and reads: "Yeah don't help malkjos. Or this cousin tonymite who also roams these forums..."

Still this thread has been a fun read during my morning coffee. L-)

At the very least the word 'clone' should appear in post #1.
An SSL G Series Compressor ISN'T what is being offered for sale.

1) why is your name not in your signature? we are all open and honest about who we are here.

2) why are you still here at all? i can't believe you're trying this on yet again.

time for a moderator to step in i reckon... this isn't really the sort of place for you tony (or whoever you are).

Besides the obvious
But I know Tony , have spent time with Him
And beside being a little ethnic in ways he strikes
Me as a good fella has been on the forum since it started
( way before this version) and frankly
I won't here of him getting tossed out
His cousin... Well how many cousins do he have ?
But the guy in question ( the cousin)
Is certainly in question on gearslutz and the like

Tony for f@#$ sakes retitle your post
As clone ..and Head up some real details or let's leave
Your cousin to dirty his own sheets .. Huh

Rick, you know I mean what I'm about to say with the utmost respect, and if you say Tonymite is an upright guy in real life then I'm sure he is, BUT, what his cousin Malkjos does and Tonymite helps him with, I just can't get behind.

The GSSL DIY project was developed by Jakob Erland, a frequent and valued contributer on the Group DIY forum and owner of Gyraf Audio. Jakob has essentially adapted the circuit to a more DIY friendly one (no esoteric parts) and designed a single sided, easy-to-etch circuit board. He's done this with not only the stereo SSL compressor, but the 1176, the Pultec EQ and the Calrec EQ. Anyone who has been introduced to the world of DIY through the group DIY forum has probably built one or more of his projects. They are excellent starting points for DIY and all sound fantastic.

Jacob has put thousands of hours into designing these projects and helping builders with problems on the DIY forums, all with only one request: That no one uses his circuit board layouts for commercial use. It's clearly stated on his website. Jakob doesn't even make money from selling PCB's, another great guy on the boards Gustav sells them. I'll not get into the argument of weather or not doing this is ethical. I reckon it's OK, because A) It's not the orginal circuit, B) it's not the original PCB layout and C) no-one's selling it. I liken it it to saying "Don't pirate that film, but you're more than welcome to shoot your own version with your own actors in your backyard and watch it. Just don't sell it".

Malkjos basically etches one of Jakobs layouts, sticks it in a hidious looking box and sells it for a coupla hundred bucks more than the cost of parts. You know, he's definitely not getting rich off this, and I doubt anyone here thinks he is. The concern, I feel, is that Malkjos is essentially taking advantage of the good will of people like Jacob (and Joe Malone, for that matter). Tonymite can be found around the traps on various audio forums promoting Malkjos's work or defending him. If he's the upstanding bloke you say he is Rick, hopefully he'll come to his senses and see that his cousin's work is not OK with what I like to think is the cool group of people in audio cyberspace.

I too am someone who makes part of their living from sticking parts in boxes. I can't design a better more compact headphone amp, for example, than Joe Malone can, so when someone asks me if I can build them a headphone amp I order the amps from Joe, check it's OK with him and build it. What I don't do is try to reconstruct Joe's circuit board layout from photos and then try to extort the missing information out of him.

OK, let's hope that's my ranting over for 2012!

Nick.

Oh make no mistake Nick
I have no love of what's going on here
But I do know Tony
He can fix up his mistake as best he can or f@#$ off by his own
Violation , I don't need a lynch squad
We all know this smells it has for years
It's stinky

All that said the clone world is so smelly ,
I could never draw a line In the sand about this stuff
Having lots more money and better marketing
Doesn't make the same crime less smelly

I have no love for Chandler stuff .. Everybody else loves
It .. To each his own
Add tele USA to that list and then let's get started on the rest and there is a long list...
have a chat to joe in private sometime and you will be amazed at who steals his stuff without care
and heads out into the world of profit mongering without a concience

The blackmail thread is just so damaging in my mind
Tonys cousin is not welcome here I banned him years ago when I first heard that sorry tale

Some people have a way of typing themselves into
All kinds of shit and just shouldn't bother playing on the net some nights
Me thinks Tony is one of those on this issue
There are a few others on the forum.

But you meet them face to face and realise sometimes
We all clearly have too much time on our hands

anybody that has ever made a gyraf thing and then sold it to somebody else has to be aware of the complicated
line in the sand selling that stuff leaves you to weave through

but tony .. mate .. wtf where you thinking ?

this is the turtlerock forum .. its my F@#$ing forum
we act like the good guys we are around here ..
not sneaks ..
and thanks to those that have pmd me and sent me the links , but I know this story backwards

but I have spent enough time with tony abstractly over the years to leave him as his own master

over the last 15 years or so this place has been running .. (is it that long ..? close enough )
I have spent enough time counselling idiotic behavior on this forum from good guys to understand the big issues

This forums much missed and loved kristian anderson (rip) , spent several nights under the seige of forum members for being a dick online .. and he was one of the great guys .

I didnt just wipe out this thread as I figured there was more to be learnt and discussed then not
ymmv

Nick,

Many thanks for that 2nd last post, I'm afraid I couldn't have been as eloquent regarding the background of this issue.

Rick,

I sincerely thank you for have patience and tolerance with this thread but a word of wisdom from someone who's just a tad older than you.....................during the course of our lives we meet innumerable people and just sometimes, the person we "see" is not real, it is a facade used to suit their purposes in a given situation, they use people without any thought of ethics or morals............................think about it ;)

And holy shit, I come back and find the post after mine, just F*$#@'ng unbelievable, some people really are a waste of Oxygen!

If you can build one yourself ... And have the time ... Then do so ... If not i have one i no longer need "loosly based" on the one gyraff ripped off the one ssl ripped off that plenty m#th£rf€ck¥rs have sold on ebay / group diy black market and the like ... I got pussy falling out my pockets'n'shit ...

If you want i can put it in a rolls, chameleon labs, that other one that fletcher loves withe jensen output tx's 1 ru case and call it what you will

I have a comp uses thats 2150 vca, ne55XX, and RC filter for attack/release in a metal 1 ru case

If i get the money for time/effort of putting together fine ... If not ill use it for spare parts for my other ssL clone..

Sorry Rick - if Its soooo outa line then ill drop the post and leave the forum and switch to cloning organic mangoes but its about as much explaination as i have time for ...

And the blackmail story is a little lob sided... Few missing pieces... But wtf

um i think it is an SSL design, so I don't think 'they' ripped anyone off.

i know it shouldn't matter; but the grammar, spelling and tone of your posts is pretty pungent.

for my mind, a 'clone' of a piece of equipment that is no longer manufactured isn't such a bad thing. it's a great way to learn how to build and repair things, which I am pretty sure behind Jakob Erlands motives.

but selling crap 'parts and labour' based on other peoples work (when they specifically request that you don't) to a bunch of guys who don't know any better - pretty ordinary.
