Still seems somewhat pointless when the vast majority of people can't hear any difference whatsoever between 16 bit and 24 bit.

Doesn't that apply to everything though? A consumer couldn't care less about the processes or the gear used to make the final product... whether its a musky fart tracked to wax cylinder or your $8000 U67 through 2" tape into your $12,000 set of converters running the latest 64bit daw program for EQing by the great phase-linear digital EQ ever created... They don't give a shit. They don't care if its a Neve, or a Ta@#$% 4 track... They are all just tools at the end of the day.

32 bit conversion can/will offer some interesting new advances... such as tracking microphone level signals without the need for preamplifiers, since the limit of 32bit systems will be the same Johnson Nyquist noise that limits analogue circuitry. More bits = potentially very different ways of recording music. I am interested in the possibilities, rather than just the flat old boring "lets try and make digital versions of analogue" approach that people seem so keen on.


I can see how it would be a startling concept for you, if you are prone to trying to keep up with the Jones'. They have a lot more money than I, so I don't really bother...

Some concepts take a while to perculate to the surface......

I was amazed to hear from a fellow engineer here in Melbourne of a funded study tour to England he did in the early 80''s. While there he was taken on a tour of a BBC funded research facility after he signed a confidentiality clause, where everything from the mic on in the signal path was digital, the A to D converter being in the mic. He was amazed at the huge potential of the flexible routing and patching options that where avaliable in the digital console. The name Neve was mentioned as one of the designers involved............not wishing to spread falsehoods on the internet, It may have been the Neve company not the man himself, those details I am not aware of. Though If i did some research I could get the story to you with added detail...... possibly a good subject for an article for this little web mag that seems to smolder along.
