Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

Just pulled out dad's old record and gave it a spin. LOVE the vocal sound, anyone know what Ozzy used (besides his voice... in terms of gear I mean)? Seems very lo-fi, as does most of the album. Has a real raw quality that I love.

Any thoughts?

... haven't listened to that one for years, though it was always my favourite Sabbath - the songs seemed to have a bit more polish. I remember listening to the record on the stereo (that's what we old fellas called them) and wondering about the strangely compressed sound and lack of level..... always just blamed the disk cutter for applying too much compression and deessing to fit it on the record..... time for a re-listen

I agree Ian, the vinyl version is much different to the CD version I have. The rhythm guitars are much lower in the mix it seems. Honestly I don't know much about the vinyl process so I can't comment too deeply on it.
I did some reading last night, and the general interweb reckons that his vocal was pretty much always doubled, with one of the doubles slightly down or up tuned and panning them a little. I can definitely hear the doubling on just about every song on the album, but not so sure about the de-tuning thing. I've tried something similar in the past and it was way more phasey/chorusey than Sab. Maybe they just did it better than me though

there's some delay/slap back shit going on as well. And also, he sounds like Ozzy.
