Lavry AD11 and DA11

I am wondering if anyone has used these, and have any thoughts. Also is there somewhere in Oz that does demo's of these?

I currently use a saffire pro 40.

The most tracks I do at once, is 6 (kick snare 2 toms and overheads)

I have enough nice outboard preamps and don't need any in the interface per se.

I have outboard EQ and Compression I like.

What I really want is at least a 6 input and 6 output high quality AD-DA firewire or USB interface that has monitor controller functionality and 2 headphone outs. Mac.

I don't want to move sideways in reality from the focusrite.

There doesn't seem to much out there, along these lines. Plenty of sideways moves.

So, I was considering getting something like the LAVRY AD11 and DA11 running them off Spdif on the Saphire.

Using them for tracking overheads, and everything else ( after tracking drums, 99% of the time I am overdubbing one track at a time) and the rest of the kit through the saffire. A lot of times, I end up doing some or all sample replacement on kick snare toms.

I wouldn't be adverse to spending up to 3K, but it would have to be a huge leap forward in AD-DA not unlike going from say the quality of inbuilt preamps in things like the saffire to something like JLM99NV/TG500/BAE1073DMP all of which I own.

I have owned things like RME9632 (back when I was on PC) apogee Duet, AW4416 and now the saffire pro. To me the sounds of A-D and D-A of those units, is what I would refer to as "sideways"

I have never head Lavry, Prism,High end apogee etc.

There is a good chance I am disappearing up the rabbit hole here...I had a car accident a couple of weeks back, and haven't been able to do any studio work, or guitar playing so I have spent the time reading on the net......8).

all advice appreciated.

Anyone been down the same rabbit hole?

The thing that also interests me in the LAVRY, is the (reportedly) great quality of the unit at 44.1/24 bit, thus reducing the strain on my old iMac C2D as I currently record at 96K because, to me the saffire sounds better at 96 over 44.1

Perhaps negating the need for a future upgrade of Computer.

I was working on this, just prior to the Learner Driver deciding the best thing she could do was have a head on crash with me and my daughter.......(on a side note, she wasn't insured, I was...its still gonna cost us nearly 3-4 grand expenses....I thought we were covered for hire car with our insurance, we weren't...even if we were it maxed out at 14 days, as a single car family, we are screwed...our car will take all up 3 months from the accident to get it back...so timely reminder to check your insurance policies.....also, I didn't realise, that we are liable for the excess unless RACQ can recover the money from her....yeah right,,,,like they will try hard If I have to pay anyways....)

I don't have any connections to them or anything but you might check out black lion audios new convertors.

They have some 2 channel ad and da boxes that are apparently really amazing.

Their "white" sparrow boxes (they have ad and da versions) are their attempt at the best quality conversion. Tony Maserati (sorry for name drop) is supposedly using them.

I know it's not 6 in and 6 out. I've just been keeping an eye on the development through their Facebook page. Just something to throw into your decision making process is all.

Well I found a shoot out on GSlertz between the FF800 by RME and the PRISM Orpheus.


Now I didn't do the shootout, so listener emptor prevails....

I grabbed the drum and guitar files.

I put em in Logic and sliced em up, randomly, and muted every other one on each track...so it would play through and switch between the takes....then I set up a loop within differing sections....now because of the way I sliced it I get the occasionally click, which blatantly gives away a change. So I found a couple of sections where the change was seamless.

I listened and watched a couple of times as it was playing, and golden eared sonofabeatch that I am I could pick it every time.

Then, I closed me eyeyholes...

hmmm, humbling experience.

It became a moot point.

In context of recording and mixing a song....it is completely irrelevant to me the differences...on my system in my room with my level of expertise.

Of course its one test, but I took another the other day in a shootout between a lynx aurora and a be!@#$%^& ADA8000 and performed just about as well.

When listening to the FF800 vs Orpheus test I thought any differences I perceived sounded a little like the guitar player moving around the mic....or the differences a drummer may have in hitting the snare.

Certainly not the sort of difference I would be happy forking out for. At this point in time. I think I have bigger fish to fry.

Well, wallet slides back into pocket....for the time being...


I think I will just stick with what I have and get back to worrying about rhyming words properly in the songs I write...

Well this was quite timely.

Just as I hit send...the missus knocks on the door of the studio and walks in with my old Denon Tape to Tape and a bunch of cassettes...she is spending Good Friday throwing out stuff...

We plugged it in and had a listen...some tunes i wrote and recorded onto a Ta@#$% 688 twenty years ago.

Man, it cost me a fortune back then, and i had a Alesis D4 drum module, with a Remo practice kit I built a trigger system for....before Vdrums were out....

We ...or I at least...forget how far the home studio has come in affordability and quality.... and how crap I was at singing 20 years ago.

D4 doesn't sound too bad....though...

I remember at the time I plonked down 800 cash for the denon, and 4600 for the Ta@#$% 688 I was in heaven...
