We have been getting off, on using 3D modellling of late, for studio and fitout design, taking Auto Cad files, importing into Google SketchUp Pro and turning them in 3D designs and producing 3D walk thru's prior to the build.

Its a lot of fun, but has been really useful prior to building furniture etc as you can turn things upside down and inside out and really fix potential design issues before you build.

Lee, after doing a couple of these, its taking about 1 week (one person) to complete the design to full construction autocad drawing stage including the 3D visuals for a 3 studio cluster like this. We spend a lot of time building components, like the Toft desk which just came from 2D images, we might get them from their website or take a photo if we have one. Some companies are starting to build 3D components which are great coz they just drop in, but if there are no 3D compnents available it can quiet labour intensive building them (timewise). We have also been building up a library of sub components, like rack panels, knobs, xlr's etc and this helps put something together. The more you get into it, the quicker it will get.

I'm a pretty new convert to sketchup but it's an amazing program. Even just doing quick models with little detail to trial layouts of furniture etc in rooms is rocking.
I have noticed that with more detailed small items it tends to be a resource hog on the computer pretty quickly though.

Hi Lee, we haven't done anymore 3D walk throughs, we have done the 3D renders for a bunch of studios in Newcastle which are now being fitted out and the Local Radio 702 Studios for Sydney for fitout next month. I can link some static renders to see, if anyone is interested?

The walk throughs are a great selling tool, but it does take a few hours of work to do and lots of horse power, our work computer isn't grunty enough, so one of the guys has to take the renders home and crunch it there.
