1/2 rack size 1176

Postby Simon B » Thu May 17, 2012 10:58 am

I just wondering if anyone knows of an 1176 in a 1/2 rack size,

I want to make a bass rig that is unbelievable, Have an Avalon U5 into an 1176, an a power amp underneath,

But I cant seem to find a half size 1176.

Any help would be greatly apreciated,

thank you kindly!

Simon if you are DIY electroncis handy or know someone who is, you could by a 1176 pcb from the link provided and build it into a 1/2 rack size case.

There a lot of stereo 1176's in a 2ru unit, so you should be able to get one in half that. I'd be sceptical about fitting everything into a 1ru 1/2 size, but I'm sure it could be done with a bit of persistance.
Is the U5 2ru tall anyway?

The U5 is half size width taking up 2 rack spaces,

add an 1/2 width 1176 an they will fit into a rack.

If you have no luck pursuing this course you should consider an LA-4. It's the right size and a bit of a classic on bass.
The other option is to replace the U5 with a Universal Audio 6176, which is a mic pre/DI & 1176 all in a 2RU.

Just to throw it out there, do you really want a compressor in your live rig?? I've not used a bass amp with an in built compressor I ever thought sounded good and i've never felt the need to take one of my studio comps out on a gig.

U5 on the other hand I have done many gigs with as a pre.

La4 is an excellent option on Bass and so is the DBX160vu and both of those are DIY projects over at groupdiy along with the 1176. Could totally fit any of those in a 2ru half rack, they'd sound good, look sexy, and you could use them to record with as well.

Quite a few guys use Distressors in their rigs- Im pretty sure for a while JMJ was using either a B12, or a SVT w/ Distressor both live and in the studio.
I'm not sure I'd use one of my 1176s live, but have used my Distressor with great satisfaction.

Toft made a DC2 which was a dual preamp with 1176 style Compressor. They also made an ATC-2 which has the whole shebang of dual pre/eq/comp which I love using live. These are around $1k
