Guitar/Synth/Pads????

Postby Kris » Tue Dec 12, 2006 11:34 am

I have been on a bit of an extended U2 bender since the shows (well, more than usual anyway) and have found some vids on youtube with Dallas Schoo.

In the vid below, can anyone tell me how/what they are using to make the synth type pad sound underneath the guitar tone? Is it so simple as a midi pick up or is there some other box of voodoo being employed here?

Thanks.

Sounds and looks like they use alot of effects for this effect.
reverbed delays ,high pass modulating filters, band pass filters, pitch shifting ,Evelope follower .You name it they use it.

I would be surprised if the edge was happy with guitar midi tracking.

It really is amazing what you can do with the order of effects on the signal path.

Always remember a distorted filter is nothing like filtered distortion.

Hope helps.

edge guitar

Postby jkhuri44 » Tue Dec 12, 2006 11:14 pm

edge uses a Korg SDD 3300 delay..

triple stack delay that you can route the feedback in very flexible ways..not to mention the modulation and pitch shifting available on it...
i wouldnt be surprised if the delay was creating those sounds...

also...it would be pretty easy for a roland GK series midi pick up to be on that guitar at the same time...with a signal split going.

But doesn't Edge use a wireless system? Unless he has ended up with a wireless GK system too...

edge

anything is possible...those guys are so loaded...

with his kinda money, IF he's using MIDI and synths and stuff...he would go a more hi end option i reckon.

or as others have mentioned...go nuts with effects and splits and what not.

i've played around with running my guitar into the vocoder section of my novation synth and spilling that through the delays etc.

i still prefer chains of analogue stomp boxes . . .

but youtube is blocked by the IT elves here, so i'm just dribbling.

I found this...

No Korg SD3300 in it though.

ok...

TC 2290 delays, an AMS delay (from the looks of things)...

2 pods (the effects of which sounds pretty schizoid....if you use them in taste).....an Ultraharmoniser...and those yellow knobbed (top left) racks are made by Korg for sure...i might have been wrong about the model number though....

a-ha! Now I know where he gets his sounds from! It's divine intervention!

Have a look at the "device" amongst the stomp boxes, in the top right of the pic (to the left of the Tube Screamer), and you'll know what I mean...

ok... looking for a solution still. There is definitely no midi pickup on that guitar. I examined my shots from the show carefully (god bless high res photography)

Is it possible to convert the audio signal from the guitar into midi?

there is....i have seen several cheap freeware software that does this...

however, midi information, especially for chords, gets highly obscured. Audio to MIDI conversion usually works best with slow, single, distinct notes with a very pure, almost sine like sound source. A clean guitar is pretty good as it is very belly in structure and has a distinct attack, but as said, there is room for mess when more than one note is played, and in a live situation (if there is even hardware that does the conversion) i think it would be fairly unreliable and disastrous :(

however, if anyone knows of any successful audio to midi conversion, i would be highly interested.

the audio-to-midi conversions i've played with really only work with a monophonic source - chords (or even excessive harmonics) thed to make everything go poopsie.

but that's only my experiences . . .

Not suggesting that this is what he does...

... but seeing as the edge tends to play alot of arpegios as opposed to chords, maybe he has a system that is able to track the individual notes fast enough?
