A kinda useful side-benefit of the day was that I finally learned the correct pronunciation of Canare (kuh-nahr-ay). I've been using (and mispronouncing, it seems) the stuff for decades! Oops...

Well, a couple of us had a conversation about it, which at the time was inconclusive, but it spurred me to look it up afterwards. We were actually discussing kenn-air or kuh-nahr-ee.

I've since found that there are several references on the 'net to the fact that (apparently) the representatives of the Canare company themselves use the kuh-nahr-ay pronunciation, so I'm inclined to bow to that. If it hadn't come up in conversation, I'd probably never have thought to check it.

when i was a pup, and just getting into music, I went to one of my first jams, and started to meet some musicians...I asked one of the guitar players what he thought of his "PERVEY" amp 8) I was trying to start a conversation, and read the name of the amp wrong. Ahh... good times....8)

Hi Dave, sorry you missed it
It was great though, I'll try and get results up within a week or two, along with some pictures. but on Ray's fine thoughts we went with an approx 20" apart ortf looking configuration about 2 feet above the drummers head, little behind looking at the guts of the kit. Thinking about it now, it really showed well the difference between cardiod and wide cardiod in this context, and really exposed a few cardiods with nasty off axis response. With a few single mics we did a mono overhead in between the tightly spaced pair

Now that will be uber interesting to see how certain brands, quality & price differences alter the nulls even if they're quoted as being or meant to sound like x, y or z.

Doing a bit of experimenting myself for the whole of June recording live at the Evelyn every Wednesday with different room mics & placements. Always had success with ribbons but time to branch out me thinks...

ill put up a new post but how does a guitar mic day at pony music (hallam) on sat or sunday 14 or 15th July, 28/29 or 4/5th august sound.

we will have a BBQ as well.

i was thinking about having a basic drum/bass track. recording/reamp guitar (the guitarist will be here all day anyway). we can do clean, grit and heavy guitar then close, mid and far mics..

any thoughts.

we also want to then do a "guitarists day" set up lots of amps and let people play them. then a snare drum day.. then a kick/snare mic day...... this is fun and a lot of people seem interested....

so next one, guitar mic day.

For me the one that absolutely nails the sound I was hoping to hear was the Neumann KM74 WOW

All mic pres were on the MCI 500 console, no processing at all

Upon reflection, the positioning we used happened to give us a clear representation of their off axis response also. As most were cardiod and approximately 1.5 meters away from the drums, many showed that they were fairly restricted. All the wide-cardiods and omnis sounded great. All in all we got a great range of results which quite clearly show the mics response and behavioral differences.

That one and the km74s were definately the wieners.

The line audios being so cheap i reckon give the others a run for their money tho...gotta say...im definately grabbing some of those babies.

Yeh I noticed that too, is that cause they're omnis? Maybe the bass was off axis... actually I dunno if any of the others were omnis

Late to the party, but still that was really good Lee - very much appreciated!!

I listened to the KM84 first (because I was most familiar with that) then went through all the others except the C451 (because it wouldn't play..).

Have to say I liked the Strasser CM 060 best for crisp cymbals and the Gefell MON M93 for bottom end.

The Mercenary was a real surprise - a more "in your face" version of a KM84?.

A very interesting comparison - great stuff
