Is high end audio gear really necessary these days?

Not at all. I'm envious that you have an interesting and accomplished friend.
I use and greatly admire many Apple products. I think the design aspect (both the hardware and the software) is genius.
I am making a little joke about the way many young people worship Apple as if it's a religion, but I do think Apple have tremendous power to shape opinion, and to be a member of the design team would mean your friend would have tremendous power to shape our futures.
It's a shame the internet has become a place where people almost by default assume they're being attacked.

Thanks for the explanation Chris. Clear communication is a challenge at the best of times, internet and elsewhere. I wasnt sure myself but your post being fairly ambiguous and open to misinterpretation , my false assumption was, as I'm not on the Forbes list of most powerful people in Australia, you where calling me out. Old Neumann mics are always noisy, sometimes a 57 is the best vocal mic in the room. It's definately not necessary but sometimes it is very helpful! Like converters, the higher end the better!

The best vote for high-end gear comes when you virtually let it do a fantastic job hands-off while you sit back and listen after initial setup is done, like yesterday: orchestral gig, 2 mics, great pres and converters, levels under control - add good players for a superb result and a super-easy gig, but all thanks to great gear.

Absolutely agree. The best gear and the best engineers become invisible and the focus goes straight to the source - where it should be!

To tell you the truth I have been all of these and this is what i have come to

We make music, and music is frequencies and thats the stuff the universe is made of.
I want the best gear because is made by those seeking the highest path. those uncomprimising designers and manufacturers who have every reason in the world to make it cheaper but dont. They just want to be the best and have the best experience with music with their time on this planet.

It has nothing to do whether or not hi end gear is necessary to make a great record, but it is absolutely necessary for your soul if your chosen path is audio!
