100mm faders....

sitting here waiting to leave for a gig....seems like thats the times my mind wanders into, what and why territory.

Have they ever made faders, say 100mm that cover less dB change in level, per distance?

Did anyone ever come out with a fader, that lets say Unity is at the top (for ease of explanation) and the first 70mm cover 6 db of attenuation?

stupid, inquiring minds wanna know?

Is it because of the physically imposed electrical limitations?

Seems like it would be handy, no?

I don't know if anyway has ever come out with something along those lines, but a fader with an "antilog" or reverse logarithmic taper will get you close. Faders that pass audio use a logarithmic law. Using a reverse logarithmic fader condenses the dB scale towards the bottom of its travel, and spreads it out at the top.

I'm not sure I'd find it handy. Logarithmic tapers for logarithmic scales like dB and logarithmic perception like hearing just seems to make sense.

[Linear]

Well, linear faders kinda do this.

I've just started changing out 40 linear faders for 40 log faders. It's interesting to compare the difference.

The linear fader feels like the top 80% covers about 10db. The bottom 20% feels like it covers about 60db.

So for fine tuning, the linear fader is actually quite good. Rob and I had a discussion about whether to keep them in the console or not.

Problem is at lower levels it's almost impossible to fine tune, at the bottom it's either zero 40db.
