Mountain Lion opinions

I would be curious to know people's opinions on OSX Mountain Lion. So far I am wondering if they shouldn't have called it "beach ball" instead. Are operating systems becoming too consumer bloated? I still use Snow Leopard on my music computer. I am finding the Safari browser pretty useless under ML, I am going to give Camino a try.

I only went to Mountain Liar on the weekend. Sure messed a few of my settings up permissions, wifi etc, although I use Firefox. I had to buy updates for a few other programs as well that I hadn't thought about. There was some swearing involved.
I reckon my MB Pro is running better on it though. Or maybe it is my imagination?
Cloud is good too so if the missus has plans for something I don't want to do, it pops up in my ical and I have plenty of time to make an excuse.

Andy, which updates did you have to pay for? Curious in the event I do upgrade my music rig from SL to ML.

I just tried ML's dictation, I am amazed that Apple released a feature that basically doesn't work and is a complete waste of time. Interesting that Siri seems to work OK, I guess ML dictation uses a different technology. It can handle a few simple words at a time but forget using it to dictate anything more than a short sentence.

thats what happens when u pay alot of monet for something, u automatically think it sounds great to fortify your awesome purchasing decisions

Steve I had to upgrade VM Fusionware and some accounting progs - all book keeping stuff, no music ones.
Jamil you are probably right. I do like airbiscuit, I mean airdrop though. Handy at the studio and offsite at meetings because we all have it. Didn't know about Dictation, must check it out. Maybe you need to use a different mic pre, maybe something Neve-ish "Whic 1073 clone will give me the best dictation?"

I was thinking a 414 with a Grace 101 and a touch of compression. Should be clean enough. And then I can try and use an American accent.

Another new O/S in short time - so all the Leopards are now n-1 and probably fall off the support radar. Great way to rollout built-in obsolescence.

Meeeehhh - discovered over the weekend that my DSLR software isn't compatible with ML. Canon EOS utility.
Bugger.
Lucky I have a PC at the studio.
They really should have an appelet that will scan your system before upgrading and tell you all the incompatible progs first, but then they probably wouldn't sell much.

...and a person stating one of their programs currently isn't compatible with a 7 day old operating system makes it "even more incompatible".

How do you think Windows 8 will fair in comparison? It is already slated to cost twice the price of Mountain Lion.

Hey Guys,

Please remember for any significant O/S updates repair your disk permissions first.
(Google it if you don't know how)

To state the obvious, you will generally get much better performance by performing a full "Erase and Install", rather than an "Upgrade"

Don't get annoyed at a company when programs don't work a week out after a major o/s update.
In my experience ;-) the people who actually do the *serious* beta testing for companies like Apple, tend to be pretty meticulous about the way they maintain their system, so bugs that may arise from a "less than ideally maintained" system may go undiscovered until after release. To give an example, a few O/S's ago (maybe Leopard?) there was a massive bug that only applied to systems that had an out of date version of a shareware program that changed the look of the dock! It was never discovered in any of the beta testing.

As a general rule, ASSUME THAT ANY O/S UPDATE WILL DEFINITELY BREAK YOUR SYSTEM

I work in video, and literally every production system in our facility (except one) is running 10.6.8 cause we know it is bullet proof. The remaining system is running 10.7.3 and it is our "test system" - we have a system that we used to test software configs that we are going to roll out. We are about to roll to 10.7.3, and my test system will then move to running Mountain Lion so that if we have to buy any additional machines, we will know how to set them up to be stable.

Obviously, you can't do this in a if you are the only one in your business, but if you have only have 1 computer, don't ever think about installing a fresh o/s until you have waited to at least read the forums and see if people have success. There will always be someone who tests on launch day, give it a month and save yourself the headaches!
