As much as I loved my 2600 I don't miss it, I find an Odyssey a much more playable synth than the 2600, given the choice I would most likely keep my Oddy over having a 2600 again, particularly an orange/black Odyssey with PPC. The Odyssey is a real live players instrument. Good luck finding a 2600, as with all ARP's, look for an orange/black one if you can find it, much better built than the grey face synths.

They aren't that good. It must be wealthier collectors pushing the prices up to those levels, much like the OTT prices people are paying for EMS synths. I guess that because of their rarity 2600's are becoming more collector "pieces" than musical instruments.

I'm not a player, so a performance synth is definitely lost on me. The Odyssey sounds great and has many of the same features of the 2600. Having said that, my only gear regret is selling my 2600 (a grey one).
I used it more as a sound processor than a mono synth. Fabulous crunch (to out and out destruction) on the audio input. Fabulous filter (mine was the Moog clone), fabulous spring reverb (trashy and dub).
All in all, the Arp sound (Oddy or 2600) is all class. My 2600 sounded rich, fat and was very flexible.
Roughly guessing the exchange rate, I bought mine for about $2500 and sold it for around $3000.
$5000 to $8000 is an amount I would never pay.
