In 1975 Led Zeppelin released Physical Graffitti. I was earning around 80 cents an hour collecting paper money. I put the album on laybuy at Target. It took me a month to buy it. That's how things worked for me back then.

Similarly, I was working in a factory after school to fund records, guitar thingys etc..... $5.95 for a single album took a lot of hard and dirty work to attain. I think double albums were about $7.95 then......

Yup, uninteresting but financially good. Which is better? Being poor and happy or more wealthy and not real happy?

There are a lot of smart folk here - I suspect a think-tank would generate a lot of wealth creating ideas.....

Someone told me a few of years ago that Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell album goes gold every year in the US from CD sales at Walmart and Kmart.

How about musical theatre? Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera" has, since it's 1986 release grossed a worldwide total of 3.3 billion dollars. That's just one of his musicals. Cats reached a billion dollars about 10 years ago. Those are figures that dwarf pop/rock stars. Phantom has reached and audience of 80 million theatregoers.

Was having lunch today when I opened the newspaper and there was a one page advert for JB Hi-fi 'The Zone' which has just opened in Oxley, QLD. I was blown away to see pics of roland drums, walls full of guitars, sennheiser, akg mics etc I have to admit that i was taken aback to start with, disillusioned that this could even happen, but then it got me thinking about when i was just starting out playing music and myself and best mates would catch a train into the city to check out all the instruments we couldn't afford and scout the records section at Palings/Brashs in the city for hours, it was a one stop music shop so to speak! We were oblivious to any politics and had massive dreams and aspirations of Rock super stardom, playing music with mates was free, recording wasn't!
The face of the industry is certainly changing at a rapid rate and in such a way that it seems no one will be left unaffected by the changes? Reading all these posts makes me think how simple but expensive things were back then, but also the joy these things brought, the nostalgia. These were certainly the analogue days where good things took time, they were character building and made you appreciate what you had. Unfortunately the soul sucking digital era is upon us, and it seems that the machines are winning!

So, when you were young you could go to one shop to buy music and the instruments used to make it; and you still can? Doesn't really sound like anything's changed does it! It always struck me as ironic that even though cassettes were killing the music industry, you could buy them in record shops. Now mp3s are re-killing the carcass of the cassette ravaged music industry and you can buy them in record shops too!

Tippa Gore was right, record shops must be the work of Satan...
