HELP - Macbook Pro install disc lost...

Postby The Tasmanian » Wed Sep 19, 2012 11:19 am

Would anyone be able to help me with a copy of the install disc for a macbook pro?
During a studio move I seem to have lost it - and now need to do a disc repair from a start up disc.
Model is:
Macbook pro 5.5
intel core duo 2.26 Ghz

Happy to pay for a DVD copy if anyone could please help me out here
Thanx

Hi Chris,

What O/S are you after? I have a brand new copy of OSX Snow Leopard that I don't need if that would help..

Thats great news Wez
Ian -its not the OS I need, just the install disc that is specific to this machine model so I can boot from the CD drive and repair some dodgy extension thingys.

Sorted!
Drive repaired with disc utility.
Laptop should go for another 4 years.

A BIG public thank you to Wez - who went out of his way to copy the install discs and take them to the post office.
What a total gentleman.

You can do a simple startup repair of your system disk without the CD.

Hold the "s" key on boot up, then type /sbin/fsck -fy and press enter.

It won't work for everything, but might sort out a problem or two.

And I don't think Apple do CD's any more (just fyi).
I didn't get anything with my new iMac. Everything is pre-installed, or has to be downloaded from the app store.
It wouldn't start up one day, and I had to take it back to the store.

Yes - its odd that they have stopped supplying a CD.... the only thing I could imagine they are attempting to do is make more money from people with "broken" computers needing to go to the Crapple Store for repair.
I'm happy to stick with my ol G5 and 3 year old laptop for as long as I can muster.

So whats the new app store thing? - do you get a free app that does disc repair?
Is it free?
Is this also a sign that CD drives are soon to be phased out?

I think it's just expensive to make and distribute CD's and paper manuals.
Everything is virtual now for Apple.
Most (if not all) of their software is downloadable. I bought FCPX from the app store and have no hard copy or manual.

hmmmm cost saving by not providing CDs...... centralised control by not distributing the O/S...... backdoor agreements with ISPs so they get fees for multi-TB downloads..... oh how cynical ...

There is also a method to download a bootable copy of the O/S that you can burn to a CD - can't remember the commands but an internet search will find it.

A lot of software products are download only. Which is a p.i.t.a on my super slow adsl, and with Aussie's effectively charged for data usage. Native Instruments updates and upgrades are download only, many of their core products too.
It took me hours to download a Maschine update (which included gigs of extra samples).

this is a completely ridiculous decision made by NI....
usually i could download new updates and also register NI offline...
this recent round i havent been able to do that, and they stress you MUST be online to register the product....
i DO NOT like internet touching my production PC...and it's generally the case, most savvy PC users dont either....
so ...ive been pretty pissed at them for pulling that BS, they should damn well know it's crap.

So they've been taking corporate lessons from Waves, Avid and Ms Palmer on how to piss off thousands of customers?

Not to open a can of worms, but everything is getting interconnected online.
You have to have this software to use that app etc. You have to be on Facebook to get that discount etc.
Personal data collection and locking you in to brand loyalty is the name of the game.

hahaha, well...tbh i love technology and good ideas.
What i dont like is modern online innovation which completely cripples and destroys actual socialisation and corrodes human relations like a silent and odourless gas.
i was eating a mandarin and there was a sticker on it that says "find us on facebook"....far out....2012 is a great yr.
