listen for your fingerprints

i read this gem somewhere on the net the other night ( i wish i knew where)
its a great way to tell if the music you are listening to is too loud and could damage your hearing.

simply rub your fingers together right next to your ear....can you hear them scratching away ...?
then play some music , if you cannot hear the sound of your fingerprints rubbing together with the music playing
then the music is dangerously loud.


when i tested the theory interesting thing is exactly at the point that i could no longer hear my fingers scratching away is the point where i instinctly knew it was too loud !

its something to keep in mind for late night sessions , drunken gigs , hollywood movies or riding on sydney trains..
kinda like a easy to find spl meter right at your finger tips at any time ,
can't hear your fingerprints , turn the music DOWN

i may use this example in a future magazine article so if anybody knows who the clever chap that figured this gem out is let me know so i can credit them

Another little trick I read somewhere to test if you've suffered hearing abuse at a live gig. B4 the show turn your car stereo down so you can just make out the singers lyrics and melody. Go to the show. When you get back in the car turn on the stereo - can you still make out the words and melody?

It makes sense I guess.

Hey cool Rick, great way to tell when the ear plugs should come out. So now we know if any of us see you walking around rubbing your thumb and fingers together we know it's not because of that whole Paul Kelly box set your mastering, hehe. $$$$$

Paul kelly is done actually and now we are working through olivia (30 albums) short break while we do the celibate rifles (5 albums) and there are rumours of a new johnny o keefe box set within the month, and of course we just did a major cold chisel thing which will be big news soon enough.
now if i could just turn all that into cash coming into the accounts at a slower rate then it leaves the accounts you would see my little fingers rubbing up and down all day.
as far as clever accounting goes
i make a good fisherman :)

Caught any good keepers this year, I hav'nt caught any decent ones at all. Summers not over yet though.

This is good advice Rick. My spl meter's been playing up a bit lately (its had a hard life) so I've been mixing without it for a while. I've just been relying on going to a quite spot every once in a while to try and reset my ears to gauge the correct level but I'm going to try this as well.
