Well that's a great outcome. The official Neumann response confirming the M49U is a legitimate factory production has been posted on PRW as well. Congrats to Rick for perseverance in the face of open hostility. Hopefully, the storm clouds are receding, the sun is breaking through and the bluebirds start to sing and we all live happily ever after!

Well Klaus said he was skeptical but willing to be convinced. I regard that as fair enough (although he did imply indirectly that Gunter wasn't a "respected mic expert"... LOL)

The other guy from PRW was a bit of a twat about it all though, what with all his "well, as any intelligent person knows, Neumann NEVER made such a mic" guff.

I'll be keen to see what his response is, if any.

If they made them in the factory- then they made them.
No argument.
Lets see who the real men are on PRW?
I don't post there (used to) - there is WAY too much flaming & ego's ready to pounce on anyone not considered in "the club". Everyone else is tolerated (almost ignored) unless there is a chance for flames....
Good on you Rick!

See the thing is I am not actually a fighter
I will never have one if I think I am going to lose

But if I know I am right .. I preserve in the face
Of whatever ..

Battles might be lost but wars are always won from
The high ground ... And all that

And there is other stuff about the validation of the m49u
That will leak out now ... And looks like norms mic
Just got made more valuable .. Which wasn't my intent
But a nice win for him !

Onwards and upwards

It is all rather civilised and gentlemanly though, isn't it?

Like... if it were gearslutz... or me in Klaus's shoes, it would probably end in people putting their fingers in their ears while shouting "You're wrong!! You're wrong!!" while rocking back and forth with a hint of insanity.

being wrong really doesn't mean much here - its more about clamping down on a discussion by those who should practice more humility - like their opinion is final - no-one is allowed to further question and research.
Hopefully some EU and US guys start to notice we have some experts and lifetime pro's down here - who know their shit.

Makes you wonder how those guys who have been repairing and dealing with vintage mics for decades didn't know about the 49U?

well the IS one in the usa i found out this morning !

look its a really rare thing .. I found one in germany 7 or 8 years ago and started asking questions ..
finally got good photos .. started asking behind the scenes ..

but its hard .. neumann have interests to protect , so do various people who have "historic stuff"
there are documents , of coarse i knew it was neumann .. but in the world of the internet microphones
its not true till an american says it is .. via a german !

so nobody knew nothin.. about this mic
and until this week .. nobody was lots of people ..

its only heavy old junk anyway :)

It's been a few days now, and I have been waiting to see the response........ over at PSW especially given the kerfuffel the previous thread on the mic caused.
Well not much has been said. I suppose some hope it will just fade away.....??

Wait six months. Then start another innocent thread on the topic.

Wait for them to go "Well as any reputable mic expert knows, Neumann made a series of special order M49Us..."

Oh look its ok

I gave Klaus the whole farm on this issue privately so he would have to see the light and get neumann to tell us publicly online whats what.
Which would just shut down that issue permanently !.
To his credit despite his earlier musings on the subject ..He did just that .
Pick your battles and all ..

But if you read Neumann response it was written very carefully and the way I read and in this light you guys might too .. to me It is says
"Ok fine of coarse the m49 u exists ! .. and this is what U stands for !.. Now would you americans stop F@#$ing around with pretending you own our company no we are not helping you find out how many we made " - NEUMANN !

(and btw my unofficial count that somebody made unofficially is still 27 btw)

I would never expose myself or my reputation to that extent I have on this subject on a whim ..
But who better to say Neumann this week then Neumann .. ?

There is much more stuff to float out about mics .. Who and where they were made , I am patient .. I am interested .. And time will wind out .

Its in nobodies business interest to float the true post war geffel stories except current geffel .
Nobody believed either neumanns story or geffels story when I ran it with direct input from both companies from them last year on that forum .

But Klaus wasn't on the forum then .. And it seems if he posts info from Neumann is allowed ..

So the truth is done and out on the m49 u !

But hopefully I have blasted a hole in the wall that allows us all to talk freely about old german microphones on the web without getting shut down ..

The thing about history is it leaves really inconvenient truths lying about for people to piece together ..
But if people make shit up on the internet .. On some kind of I am the king of the hill go away little man thing its kind of a drag but really doesn't change the truth .. It just hides it for a while .

I am sure all those guys are great guys one to one .. Its hard to know anybody over the net .
so i am ok .. you just have to understand the back stories
And as I have said half a dozen times I have no dog in the fight.

I wouldn't worry about the silence , its better to have friends then enemies .
they are not going to start up on me again in a hurry .

they are all at AES anyway
presumably collecting all known m49 u information for the oncoming seminars and photo collections :)

They can have it .. I have other problems far more real the 60 year old rare german mics
I am sure we all do .

I've been on a not so deserted island over the past week and it was hard to see all that was going on. Good on ya Rick. This is a great outcome. There are so few of these little victories in the web, and you jagged a cracker.

Well done also to Klaus for still having an open mind and following up.
