Metropolis in Fremantle is a hideous venue. It's really a glorified pub/club and has, shall we say, undesirable clientele.... bogans and skanks. I have done a few gigs there. The carpet is like quicksand.... all sticky and squelchy.

Enmore Sydney... not my favourite Sydney venue. Seats aren't very comfy, decent sight lines though if you don't mind standing. I saw Sigur Ros there a while back.

Can't comment on the others as I haven't been there.

the palais has a cool vibe if you're right up the front..... but in terms of sound, well i'd say upstairs is one of the worst spaces i've ever heard. there are some serious (possibly structural!) resonances that do my head in.

shame really cause it's a cool venue otherwise (but many will not agree).

APR-16 BRISBANE THE TIVOLI - yuk

APR-18 MELBOURNE THE PALAIS THEATRE - yes

APR-21 SYDNEY ENMORE THEATRE - yes

APR-22 PERTH METROPOLIS FREEMANTLE - NO

palais and enmore are very similar (but different). enmore has a good house system. palais no house system. so depending on the acts $$$ it may or may not be good (especially upstairs). actually upstairs at palais usually is average, the enmore is ok to good upstairs (again house pa).

forget freo and the tiv.

The Metropolis in Fremantle sounds like Tarantella's of my mis-spent youth, wonder if it's the same place.

Hey Bon Scott's old stomping ground is from Fremantle....Whats that got to do with sound of metropolis? absolutely nothing.

I've heard a few people say and even some bands that the sound of the P3rth c0nvention c3ntre is shocking and some refuse to have any more gig at the pcc which is a shame because it was ment to replace both the bursw00d superd0me and the p3rth ent3rtainment c3ntre for events.

Chall3nge stadium has picked up a lot of gigs as a result of pcc sounding so bad.

Hhmm wonder when venues are going to be designed to sound good in general. I'm noticing more that people don't like hanging around in bad sounding venues and alot of cheaper buildings do not take acoustics into consideration in the right way.

Postby Damien » Wed Feb 21, 2007 11:36 pm

ive done some great gigs at metrop in freo. i actually quite like the place.

it doesnt sound to bad. had had some ok pa's (i usually bring my own) but it not a bad venue.

its a NIGHTCLUB, with security (ok thugs) and is REALLY LOUD....

i would much prefer to go to the mel or syd gigs as listed coz im older and fat and not dont dig clubs.

I was gutted when they closed down the Perth EC. I'd done quite a few gigs there when I lived in Perth. It's so short sighted of them to kill the PEC AND Burswood Dome. Perth is going to miss out on some great gigs because there is not a decent large venue anymore.

I used to make corporate videos and the Perth Convention Centre Trust was ALWAYS making these videos to pitch to government. I think I made about 4 of them. They were like a dog at a bone and then they finally got it and built the thing on the shores of the beautiful Swan River and guess what? Not one window faces the river. Riverside = Loading Docks. Genius.

I agree with you Andrew. I was in a newly opened restaurant the other night, all glass and bare walls 20-30 people. Couldn't hear myself couldn't taste the food even. Designing for sound in venues is very rare. Most peoples conception is that you put pyrimid shaped panels on the walls and thats about as far as it goes.

Thanks Scott, yep most people go for those ac0ustic til3s which for most situations is not the answer and can even make things worse.

Kris, I think the g0vernment is kicking in another 100 mil cause the PCC is struggling. We like to refer to it as the big tin shed.

Sometimes it cost effective to properly acoustically fix a bad sounding venue. Sometimes it more cost effective knocking it down and building again.

Has anyone been to the Metro in Perth (not freo)?

Perth Metro is MUCH more upmarket in terms of fitout, but has the same sort of clientele.... ie, John Kizon and his mob. Not a nice place for those of us on the good side of the law.... and I assume you all are :-)
