New years resolutions/ 2013 big issues

Postby The Tasmanian » Mon Dec 31, 2012 10:36 am

2013?
I generally dont like NY resolutions - but this year I am going to set some up, times call for it
Just wondering what you all are looking at as far as NY resolutions - not the simple ones - but the bigger ones for work / family / sustainability etc.

My ones would be:
#1 - dont borrow ANY money/ pay off stuff ASAP - stupid times to get into ANY debt
#2 - use much less electricity, eg: turn stuff off everything when not in use (especially in the studio) - start a DIY solar system, with the intention of expanding it over the years ahead
#3 - sell shit I dont use/need (before the value collapses even more) - stop purchasing gear, chasing the new stuff is a futile illusion that it improves my work.
#4 - live life more/work less/be a plus for my friends, family and colleagues
#5 - grow more food to eat/give away, learn from my previous mistakes / successes.
#6 - Avoid purchasing food or fuel from duopolies (Woolies and Coles) using shareholder returns continually rising as an excuse to rip off US - small business/farmers/shops - always support small independant shops & servo's
#7 - avoid all MSM and its pathetic lack of truth journalism, always read my news from Independant Australia (http://www.independentaustralia.net) and other great web/ news sources.
#8 - dont watch TV - at all
#9 - be very alert that climate change IS happening, my role in it, and how to reduce my contributing to future generational horrors - continue to call out all extreme liars peddling many untruths (Abbott/Murdoch/Jones)
#10 - be much more creative
#11 - be more pro active on issues that affect fairness in society/ the environment. Remember I am part of a big family of beings on this earth, and the protection of all species now and into the future is a moral obligation for being here.

Anyone else?

My plan to complete the outdoor dunny studio by Dec 31 failed, but it looks like I'll finish it this week(!).

So my resolutions:
1. no more reading the "for sale" section of TRF
2. only spend money that has to be spent (eg. my desk needs some loving)
3. sell any gear that hasn't been touched in a year or more
4. Use the web productively, and do not visit any website that is a time waster... (eg. pretty much every forum except TRF)
5 . Finish my wife's album.

I have only a short list:
1. It's past time to finish the sound treatment on my "temporary" mix space (it's turned out to be less temporary than I ever intended - sigh).
2. This looks like the year to get that mobile recording rig back into commission!
3. See 1 and 2 above.

That's a big list Chris, though very similar to the way I've been thinking and doing for a long time. Nothing can be perfect, but hey as long as we keep the joint clean, use as little non renewables as possible, stay away from giant retailers such as the evil bastards you mentioned and help our mates. It's all pretty good.

I'm gonna give Sea Shepherd another donation, they probably gonna need it this year. These guys do things the way I think they should be done. Real action, no bullshit.

I have no resolutions this year, just hope it's a better one than the last shitty one. Actually my friend had breast cancer, I guess if it were not for Kris's untimely passing I would'nt have hassled her so bad to get checked over such a small lump. Lucky I did hassle her, anyway after lumpectomy and 8 weeks radiotherapy things are looking ok. Feels like it's a better year already.

Hope everyone here has a good year! As a lot here seem to have done it real hard lately.

Good on you Heath -
Sea Shepard is a shining light out there amongst the dung of rape and pillage the oceans to make money out of the last "resources" of the ocean.(& earth)
I'll have to put a Sea Shepard donation on my list too - thanks for bringing that important point up.

My list is very similar to Chris', except not watching TV. ;)

I don't bother with NY resolutions, but try to live better throughout the year. I started my weight loss programme last June for example. Had a bump in the road over Christmas, but will pick it back up in the next week or so.
I guess my biggest goal for 2013 is to move, and to find more work..... both of which are going to be mighty hard.

Man, isnt getting older great 8)

I am sneaking up on 50, and in the last few years, got me a spare tyre. It also seems harder to drop the weight than it did even in my 40's

So whats your weight loss plan, if you dont mind sharing.... would be interested

My weightloss plan is to make sure I spend an hour a day in my veg garden, plant trees, build a barn studio - just get outside and get fit doing things physical.
I can't do gyms

My partner bought 'Losing the last 5 kilos'.
http://www.amazon.com/Losing-Last-Kgs-S ... e+kilos%27

It's all pretty obvious stuff, but we decided to follow some of the rules. No continuous snacking, no food after 8pm. More water, less fruit juice etc. I cut back on the alcohol consumption, which was only social anyway. But one bottle of wine a week, instead of any time I fancied one. Walk more, less sitting about all day.
The formula is quite slow, but also reasonably painless. On a good week I lost 1kg, some weeks only 500grams. If we had a social event we might not lose anything, or put 1kg back on.
Both of us were only 'overweight' rather than obese. My goal was to lose about 10kg between June and Christmas. I lost about 7kg, probably gained about 2kg over the last couple of weeks, as we suspended the diet.

From the research I've done I think the best advice is to avoid obviously bad foods (lots of fat, lots of sugar) and keep moving. Most people these days spend most of their day seated, in an office, in a car, in the studio. It turns out sitting is one of the worst things you can do for your health, even if you eat quite healthily.

"Yep be there at 9am"

9am ?

930am? (ring no answer)

1000am?

1030am? (ring, facebook, email, text.. no answer)

1100am? wife enters studio "Wiz, we right to leave you said you would be done by 11?"

1101am wife exits studio

1105am wife and daughter exit house

1200pm Phone rings "Wiz......... mate............... I am (1hr 35 mins drive) down at Shitsville Tennesse , Oh? I was supposed to be there at 9am. Geeze, bit of a mix up. Well, I will be back at 4pm. What do you mean you cant see me this arvo, but I need to listen to the song you mixed. But, I dont want to wait till Monday. Oh okay, see you monday"

arrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

Seriously, this and a conversation I had with someone else this morning, had me seething over my sandwich for lunch. I really should just close to studio doors to the public, I cant make any F)(*CK^ng decent money anyways...

And all this, after I had given the speech, you know the one, 9am is 9am its not 10 am , its not 945am, its 9am, and if you cant make it, f((*87ng call me and let me know.

arrrghhhhh!!!!

"i just need to finish these songs ive been sitting on for 12 months"....

Had the same problem a few years ago. Solution: joined an online UK advanced composition course. You get an online tutor who is there, in the advanced section, mainly to get out the whip constantly for 12 months, along with the odd piece of withering criticism.
You just finish struggling to submit one section, when he comes back with the equivalent of "Thankyou. Revise these bits - shoddy and careless - and your next section is due in 4 weeks from now." (It helps to be scared of your tutor).

Result: a one-hour piece in 9 movements, perfect length for a CD. mAGIC!

I have a few short ones.

- Say yes more often to scary things. They usually end up being super fun.
- Try to make a habit of riding my bike to work.
- Get past the technology, get with the creative.
- Get more sleep. It means the above is MUCH easier to do.

Lets see how we go! :ymparty:

That's a great list Chris, more people should be like that. Some of mine off the top of my head;

- Take the time to listen to more music (might sound strange but I have not been listening to much for a long time)

- No more synths (lets see how long I last once NAMM hits haha)

- Take some risks (I am way too "smart" for my own good sometimes)

- Don't overthink shit, take it as it comes and don't forget to just live life.

oh and...

- Get a studio set up fiiiiinallly! haha :)

It's been about 4 months since we've set foot in either Coles or Woolies. That continues to feel awesome so don't need to resolve anything there. I normally pay a lot of attention to my own health and fitness and I let it slide in 2012 from being too busy with artistic pursuits. I resolve to amend that in 2013. I did teach myself to headstand in 2 days though and was utterly hopeless when I started so that was a win. They make me feel better so I would like to implement them into each day. Meditate more. Read more. Help someone who needs it. Love my family as much as possible. Be thankful for everything I have. When I'm struggling be even more thankful for everything I have. Continue to reject all fear based systems of control. Re read old "Last Word" columns by Rick because they always lighten my mood and I can get a bit heavy. Go hard. Make more art. Be well and be your best in 2013 everyone.
