Carbon Tax ? Fires, Insurance Hikes, Govt Complaints

Can some knowledgeable person estimate the cost of the Carbon that is being emitted by the large number of bush fires this year.
Although this is a serious time for people populated in these areas, could the amount of Carbon being emitted be more then the total of Australia industrial pollution?

I also love how quick the insurance giants like Suncorp etc jump on the wagon saying that due to the increase in natural disasters get ready for another hike in insurance premiums.

Also why is the Govt not taking serious issue with preparation plans/infrastructure in dealing with these continual problems?
Suncorp recently explained that they have refused Flood Policy coverage for Emerald and Roma towns until the Govt builds infrastructure. In 2007 it was going to cost the Gov't $2million to build a levee in these areas. Since then the Govt has paid out over $500m to these affected towns in repair and rebuilding costs which could have been saved.

Two words: Global warming.
More regular and more serious fires, more regular and more severe flooding was predicted ten years ago.
No amount of infrastructure building or complaining about insurance, changes any of that.

I think that last issue you mentioned is really interesting, first I've heard of it. I mean interesting/ tragic of course. I guess we are talking about the Qld Govt who should have built the levee, but I'm not sure if the $500m repair you are talking about was state or federal govt. The Qld Govt has had sweet fa money to play with lately (I don't really know why exactly)

But say you're given a budget and told there's absolutely no extra money. And there's the GFC going on. And a lot of important services like disability care is in need of money and is probably the worst in the country. And then someone tells you to build a levee, not having any idea when a catastrophic flood would hit. I suppose if they were willing to sack a few extra public servants in 2007, they could have built the levee...

Did we have a GFC in Australia in 2008? I thought the Aust political leaders said we escaped it hence the 2 x handouts of over $40 billion???

Anyway I see that this type of thread is pretty pointless but its nice to get something off your chest once in a while.

Insurance companies are a business, they aren't there to take losses, consequently they'll take any opportunity to minimise those losses.

Governments.........well like it or not, they're a business too. How well they run their business can be open to debate.

As to today's temperatures.........well it's just been a good hot, dry Australian summers day. I remember numerous times when we hit 110deg F (43C).........was just an even better reason to be at the beach.
