Video format for PT9 Question

what is the best video format to import into ProTools 9?
Today I received an MP4, which I found does not work in Protools - and I would like to request another simple file format from the editors that is best suited to work in Protools - and is not a huge drain on the software - average quality

Its been a few years since Ive imported a movie to work to.
Any help would be much appreciated

There are so many different formats now..

Quicktime or .Mov are just containers for any number of types of file.

Ask your editor for an SD "Apple DV" or "Quicktime DV" file.

and to muddy the waters further– the issue is probs h.264 codec, mp4 can also be encoded by QT / others and PT will play with the format ok (I just spent today working with an mp4 vid file in tools 9 with no problems).

I have been told changing the extension to .mov can be a quick and dirty workaround with some problematic files but can't vouch for this from experience.

Actually I tell a lie - just double checked and the video file I've been working with today is H264 / AAC / 320 x 320 – imported and worked perfectly all day in PT9 with no hiccups. H.264 has been problematic for me in the past.

Yeah I tried changing it to.mov - no go
The only info reference I can find out there is to get a Motion JPEG A video instead of MP4/H.264
Good to know the AAC works.

Do you have quicktime pro? My system although Cubase, hates H264, so I just open it in quicktime and re export it as DV mov file.

I'm sorted.
I downloaded a trial version of Aimersoft video convertor
Worked a treat
- actually its a really good program for all formats - any gadget/phone/ithing

Chris FYI there is also MPEG Streamclip which is completely free and seems to do any file to any output, and you can batch automate if you've got a bunch to do. Pretty handy bit of kit..
