ok. so it's got BNC word clock. and two headphone amps. apart from that, and all the bundled instruments, there doesn't seem to be much difference between the 003 and the 002.

certainly does not seem worth an upgrade - it's still 18 inputs max, and that's at 48khz.
it still doesn't support 96khz through lightpipe (s/mux), and 96khz is limited to 10 inputs max (8 analogue + 2 s/pdif OR lightpipe)

i might'a been interested if they hadda implemented multiple s/mux lightpipes to achieve 16 chn. at 96khz . . .

if you're on a 002, don't even think of upgrading. compared to the upgrade from 001 > 002, this is nothing.

the m-audio lightbridge http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/ProFireLightbridge-main.html - 32ch's @ 48khz, or 16ch's @ 96khz s/mux - $500 USD. add the protools m-crippled software and where ever you are, there you go.

well, that's just my $0.02,

compared to the 001 to 002 upgrade this is nothing? :?: :?:

Im convinced that LE users are half mad. The upgrade from the 001 to a 002 really isn't all that different than the upgrade from the 002 to the 003. But of couse every LE user overlooks the biggest possible upgrade which is to the quality of the conversion. None of them even mention it... instead they are too busy sulking because they haven't gotten Protools|HD for $1200US.

Perhaps I can avert your attention to the fact that no Digidesign product has S/MUX. Which raises the question, have Sonorus (the proprietors of S/MUX) denied them a license to it?

..and before you mislead protools|LE users into thinking that they can get 32 channels of I/O in and out of Protools MP, I'd like to point out this little note that exists at the bottom of the product website:

* Pro Tools M-Powered currently supports a maximum of 18 simultaneous inputs and outputs.

LE users have recieved a lot in the last year or so. Increased track counts, much better midi implementation, improved plugins and the addition of softsynths... but like usually, you give them an inch and they want a mile at no extra cost.

I was, and probably still would be if I didn't need work with video. The combination of LE & DV toolkit doesn't provide enough tracks for what I need to do so I opted for Nuendo 3. No biggy, it still has AAF, OMF, OpenTL and AES-31 so transferring between PT is still a piece of cake.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a midrange solution come from Digidesign... but I very much doubt its going to happen any time in the near future. I'm just sick of every second LE users complaining or declaring the end of digidesign because they set their expectations so high which was also going to end in utter disappointment anyway. The differences between the 001 & 002 aren't that much different from the 002 and 003. In the grand scheme of things, I doubt the majority of protools LE users even know what s/mux or ADC are. The drawbacks of buying into something that is clearly marketed as a prosumer product. :?

well i'm an LE user (at home) and i agree 100% with mr ziggy.

for various reasons i've just got a G5 for home, had to sell my 001 which was most annoying because it was perfectly fine and in my opinion virtually identical to the 002R. 96k? have only seen one record come through here at 96k. and having 96k at the expense of having to use the 002 converters? yeah great. i want my 001 back.

but our HD system is our lifeblood. sure in an ideal world we'd have RADAR or something else but but in the real world it brings in work like you wouldn't believe.

anyway we don't really need another "PT/digi sucks" thread. all i want to do is get audio into the machine and get on with it. for that i love pro tools. digidesign may be bastards sometimes but boy they're getting good at it.

as rick might say, go and write a great chorus and get on with it.

"The upgrade from the 001 to a 002 really isn't all that different than the upgrade from the 002 to the 003"

Huge difference (001 to a 002), being that it runs on firewire out of a laptop and 96khz if you want it and of course 48 tracks with the expansion pack. I have to agree that there isn't a big difference from 002 to 003.

aargh, the 48 tracks you are talking about is the music production toolkit which was released in march last year as an addition to Protools|Le 7. It costs an additional $500. The 002 was released in 2003 with protools 6.1 software. Its hardly an upgrade associated with the 002. If you want to include it, we better mention the surround sound option that is pending for release in the coming month... or so sources say.

The hardware recieved improved conversion then some clown decided to double the number of mediocre preamps with gain stages directly linked to the first four converter inputs. Firewire a huge upgrade? Hardly, the rack doesn't "run" on firewire, it still needs power thus is no more mobile than a rackmount computer. Looking at the 001 and 003, the thing has barely changed as a piece of hardware... yet people are saying that the 001 to 002 upgrade was huge? Now really, put that angry LE user attitude in the closet and look at this thing objectively.

I'm not into the 002, but then you can't run a 001 off a laptop. I use a HD system and I recently bought the Mbox Pro for location use which runs directly off the firewire, no main power, now the Pro is a good little setup.

sigh. thanks aearth.

i think the ziggster kind'a missed my point.

and where is he getting all this "angry LE user" stuff from? did i say anything like that? i certainly ain't one of them.

my only complaint with protoolsLE (or protools) is the need for a blasted computer in the studio.

ok. so -
001 > 002
from PCI > firewire = upgrade
from 48khz > 96khz = upgrade

isn't that enough? back in the day, it was a huge step. and that was quite a while ago.

yes, i run at 96khz. only when i can't run tape. and i never use the built in mic pre's.

like, der.

I haven't missed anything. You're just another LE user that wants HD features before even considering what might be a potentially substancial increase in sound quality. You've never even mentioned it.

Do you actually make music, or just collect studio equipment?

seems a tad harsh in my opinion.

but what i really don't understand is ziggy's angle, what's the point in ragging a guy out because his point of view is different to yours?

i know this may sound a bit rant-y BUT, this forum is the best around because people don't treat it like a schoolyard...

i ask people to forgive me any offense i may have caused.

but from my end, i don't know what happened.

i certainly meant no offense to anybody.

i simply thought (at first) that i was following up on a thread regarding the 003 . . .

i certainly appreciate this forum for the positivity and comraderie that is generally the norm.

regards to all,

chris.

Chris (mfdu),

Mate you have caused no offence, someone just seems as though they have a large foreign object stuck in a bodily orifice..........I guess in some circles, that could be considered reason enough to to act like a small male appendage.

Now kiddies, how bout we get back to the topic...

The 003, according to DIGI, is an Upgrade to the 002.

It has better converters, better pre's, and the other stuff.

If you are one of the people who were thinking about sending a 002 to
blacklab to do their mods, this is potentially the soloution for you.

A 003, will not replace your HD rig, or make you a better engineer, or get you a new girlfriend.

However, if you were thinking about buying a 002, but were concerned about the converters, this is a good thing...

... Me Personally, I am waiting for the other new product that Digi have alluded to coming out later in the year, to fit between the 003, and the Hd systems...

the 002 does the job until i can justify to myself or the powers that be (depends who pays!) that a HD rig is worth it

regardless what people think of tools, its fast and i'm fast at it and hasn't crashed on me in a looong time (but i give that credit to the mac, not digidesign)

doesn't seem to be substantial enough upgrade in the 003 to make a lot of people jump ship... was wondering when digidesign would fill the hole between 002 and HD

Digidesign apparently consider the 003 to be a "refresh" rather than an "upgrade"...in which case I think their mistake is in the marketing rather than the product. Apparently they're not expecting 002 users to to buy it, but rather those who were intending to buy a 002 will instead buy a 003. They really should have called it 002.1 or something.

Even though I'm not a ProTools user, I've been hanging around long enough to read countless complaints from Digi customers about the gap between the 002 and HD. There's a real keenness for a product somewhere in between, or at least with substantially improved functionality over the 002. When Digi released the 003, and it's improvements are minimal, the market feels severely let down. I would have thought Digi rely heavily on their existing customer base preferring to stick with the devil they know - in which case, the last thing they want to do is to piss off that customer base to the point where they would consider jumping ship.

To add insult to injury, Digi's position is not only that the 003 is only a "refresh", but there's a major upgrade just around the corner. The 003 experience just serves to introduce skepticism and doubt. So the 003 is a mistake in a number of ways, IMO, and none of them have anything to do with the product. It's all about customer service, and my view is Digi dropped the ball on this one.

This might sound dumb, as I am not a tools user, but if you are looking for a 002-HD bridge, why not buy an old TDM system and put some good converters on it? Does anyone really track and mix at 96khz here? I know I can on my Logic rig but I almost always track music at 44.1khz.
