digidesign pre

has/ does anyone use the digipre?
i got a couple with an HD system i just picked up.
ive never really looked at them before and cant find too much info.
they seem pretty well specced, and of course ill plug them in for a listen.

but does anyone think they are great/ useless/ worth holding onto/ worth selling (what are they worth?)

i dont like em much tbh. very bland sounding...they're are specced as clean pre's, but really are so unremarkable. It does have 8 channels tho...(or was it 4?)

Andy from Avid was at our workplace last week and we discussed this pre. He totes them as being as clean as they come. Apparently Avid/Digidesign's design philosophy behind it was make it as clean as possible so that it's like of like 'blank canvas' to paint on with plugins in the box. That's not really my bag but I'm sure there are growing number out there who appreciate this centiment.

I've used them at Baker Street Studios. They have 8 millenia and 8 (maybe 16) digidesign pres and I've used them on mostly clean classical or jazz recordings with neumanns, schoeps and gefells. Didn't notice them in a good or bad way, though the recall is good if you need it. Could be good for your location recordings if you need remotely controllable preamps.

Boring but clean... Didn't really notice much difference between those and my mbox 2 pre's to be honest.

That's a different angle to approach it that's for sure!

Maybe one thing to be aware of is they can spit / click when adjusted – normally fine but in my experience it means you need to set your levels conservatively and stick to them.

and yes dave id heard the same - its the same story with any pres that have digital gain (ie pretty well all the ones that are recallable)

i did think about keeping them for my location stuff (and buying one more so i had 24)
but they are big and heavy, 2RU each in deep boxes....

think ill put them over on the for sale section for someone they suit better than me and that will be the deciding factor!
