Definitely some unique thinking behind the Allison Research gear, and the marketing of it too!
The Gain Brain I is a very interesting device, and the Kepex practically defined a decade of drum sounds, as well as bringing the first real automation system to market. Paul Buff did plenty of other innovative stuff too, and still is, in lighting world apparently.

To my mind, all automation is a bit like that. Great when it works (and works the way you want it to first time) and great when you know the system inside out. Otherwise it can end up taking a share of the focus away from the actual business of making the mix sound the best it can.

Not saying I don't see the benefits as well - just that it can be a mixed blessing.
