Digi 002 & RME Fireface 400 ADAT

Hey, has anyone here used this combination? I'm looking for first-hand experience of using the RME in standalone mode, just for the converters, and piping that via ADAT into the 002.

I've never tried to clock the 002 via optical... I hear it's pretty flaky. I have a location recording coming up and this will probably be the setup. I'm a bit nervous about it.

The alternative I guess is to ditch the 002 altogether and just get PT9, and use the RME as the sole interface - anyone used that combo?

It really has to be ProTools - I'll be under the pump engineering, playing and producing, editing on the fly etc, so I won't be wanting to have to learn anything new.

I have done a number of live recordings with 002r's over the years and my general expernce is that i spent a lot of time with my fingers crossed hoping it would behave itself. That be came even more aparent when trying to lock it with other devices. I oftern took sends from a dm1000 over Adat and sync could be a a real pain in the ass some times and a breeze others. I am now on pro tools 10 and using focusrites and Apollo with much more stability, that said I still always have a back recorder running as well.

I don't have any experience with the rme stuff but I would suggest that the less gear you have to slave together the easier your gig will be.

Idid it for years until recently with the swiss sonic adat converter via light pipe and 44.1 k

could never get it to be reliable at 96k though with the weiss stuff

Can't speak for the rme. But I used an Apogee Rosetta 800 and worked ok with the 002 via adat.

I've also used an m audio 2626 with the Rosetta 800 via adat smux at 96k for mixing.

As I suspected... it should work, it does work... except when it doesn't.

A practice run is in order I reckon.

Forgot to ask... I'm assuming you all set the Digi hardware to lock to the incoming optical clock? from what I gather, that's where it tends to go pear shaped.

Iv'e never had a problem running ADA8000 or Focusrite Octopre, 002 set to follow adat. It's been rock solid for me.
