Solid state hard drive with G5 mac

Hey All,

I just purchased a G5 with HD3 accel system, just wondering if anyone knows if I could put a solid state drive in it & if it would work? Help please!

not in an older G5
but in my 8 cores (3.1 build) i run the system drive as a 250 SSD in the lower optical bay
the cable/ converter is a 50 dollar order from the use, and is likely the same/ similar for the old g5 model as they were a very similar build
from 4.1 build onward, the cable is already in the bay as standard - so its super easy!

So I need to get a sata - sata3 cable is that right? I'm not very computer techy sorry.

If you want to save money - use a laptop drive, and a caddy to support it in the drive slot.

Or do as some people do, just lay the laptop SSD in the drive bay and use a lead that converts both plugs to marry.
Whenever you move your computer to another location, you unplug the laptop drive which is loose in the drive bay before removal.
Much cheaper than a bigger SSD

chris is correct - if you dont want to mount it properly in the optical bay
you can just "lay" it in one of the drive bays
and remove it if you move the computer

then you just need a 3.25 to 2.5 (or whatever those imperial measurements are) converter for 50 bucks
just google "fitting SSD in G5 drive bay" and you should get a result for the little adapter you need to order

I'm about to get a 80g SSD laptop drive to chuck in my G5, I'll just run the system only on this drive, and use another for audio/itunes etc.

I just found a replacement G5 for $75!
Its fun running behind with technology, with almost the same tools, doing as good a job as anyone else with high quality set-up that is very cost effective.
Kills a native system for tracking.

Let us know how the G5 goes with the SSD.

Ok so the caddy arrived today. I stuck the HD in it, plugged it in & nothing. Turns out I needed a sata1-2 SSD not a sata3 as they are to not compatible with the G5. So I have ordered a new SSD the right speed. Fingers crossed when it arrives. Will keep you posted.

yes... there are lots of "maybes" with the G5 (compared to intel)
cause so much changed with the intel builds, lots of things arnt as they appear, and you have to dig a little deeper with a G5.

So I got the right SSD installed in the 2nd bay. It seems stable PT works well. The only problem is if I restart the computer it can't find the drive, but if I switch it off & then back on it works just fine.
