@ Steven - Great looking CK12.Well done How does it sound?

I've found that CK12's vary SOOOO much.When you get a good one, treasure it.The most remarkable capsule.As with all capsules, upon purchase it's almost impossible to tell cond from a visual.You can have a showroom specimen visually, but tragically it's lost all of its tension.That's the critical prob with these non center terminated capsules.

I've heard a still sealed 251 head sound very average.

Its awesome. Outstanding.
I used the one at Sing Sing and it blew me away. So I tracked one down and it blew me away. Haven't put them side by side. It had just been serviced by Andreas Grosser when I got it.
But...
For what I do, (use 20 kinds of distortion on vocals) I'm a sucker for the SM7b. Everyone I work with is far more comfy singing into the Shure. The last person I used the 414 on complained they could hear their pancreas working.
As I only ever use Soundpark or Sing Sing, I'm spoilt for mic choice, So it kinda just comes with me on sessions for the company.

I'll look into other avenues for the DO's.You would know, that acquisition of rarities, comes about through gentle, gentleman like, consistent pestering

ive been going round and round again..

i was using u47-V76 (or 72) no comp, or a great NOVA Sound (blue) comp, or distressor.

lately ive been using 414buls (i havent really dug this on vocals since tape.. maybe im deaf and want the tops..) into the turtlerock auction / rob squire neve 33415 - Nova Compressor. i love these nova comps.

i actually helped build a bunch of them when i worked for nova.. i believe they have the same gain reduction thingy as DBX160X and the ALSmarts have.. not as grabby as either.

nothings up , I have just paid a packet on june 30 to make sure the forum can host photos and I am really curious about local real world vocal setups.. its been very informative so far

If you want to post a photo use the upload attachment function under the post a reply section you can grab them straight off your iphone library or off your puter desktop .. its been like that forever.. but this site has something like 15,000 pages and the online space was getting to be a premium.. to a point that is no longer a problem
besides nobody can see your photos unless you a forum member ..

I'm a fan. I did some learning with a fella that pretty much uses it for everything including at times a full band and no other mics. Its a handy bit of kit. Ugly as sin tho.
There is a KU81 for sale on ebay at the mo. The price changes daily between $3k-$4k.

47 Style homebrew (use to be U67 or 87 but both sold to fund new room) Pickstone pre or Trimax tube or neve, distressor (just knocking the peaks off), sometimes Buzz SOC1.

With the magic secrets all out in the open (exception being unobtainium items such as VF14 etc) there is a lot of great diy gear available to these handy with a heat stick that is in the same ball park with the classics. I will be trying the U67 on groupdiy when I can afford to.

Here's the pic. Yeah the buzz comp is a great. But whats' with the name???? haha I'm down for an imminent delivery of a Lucas CS 1..... (well have been since Feb....) so will be adding that to the mix. But luckily I have been too busy with toddlers and reno to be tracking until now.

i feel like mine is a bit ghetto (especially considering some of the other gear i have!)
but for years (like seriously, 10 years) I've been MANN M21 - Peach 916 - DBX160 (years ago) and now just LA6110 pre/comp.

in mixing ive used all kinds of different comps, but often the 6110 again, or a 160, these days usually a focusrite producer pack.
but something thats pretty well always on there in the mix is the BSS901 multiband comp (or "spectral EQ as they call it")

works for me.
better than anything else, including much more expensive chains, so I'm sticking with it.

i do like the Beta58 - neve prism combo ive used on a few live recordings too.. but certainly not my go to.

Not for vocals - have not even contemplated it as I have way too many compressors on hand, but I do use them for drums, guitars and other tasks at times.
What about you? what do you use them for?

I do use them for vox as well though not lately as a few have gone down and they are due for maintenance. Cash and other issues mean they will have to wait idle for a while. Something we all have to juggle I suppose. When I have used them for vox, I switch in the comp and gain them up until the red comp light indicator glows once in a while and I don't hear anything that sucks.That's about as scientific as it gets. They do seem to be a great sounding comp as I have experimented with running a mix through a pair and they reach the point where the more level you pump in, the out put gain level is no louder and they still sound ok compression wise. The mix just gets more squashed and saturated as distortion kicks in and its all musical and usable if you are after that sort of thing. Other things I use em on is acoustic guitar and extra channels when I'm recording through the Audek as they are very similar to the Audek in topology etc.
I have one really great vox recording ( well what I think is a great result ) from them with the SE vox condenser when I tracked a band live in our house and we ended up keeping the guide vox as we couldn't better it with our efforts in the studio.

I picked up the Antares equivalent (the "Autotune Producer") when it was thrown in with the purchase of several items.

I've now owned it for two years and have yet to plug it in. If anyone wants it, make an offer.

U67 - Focusrite ISA 220 then straight in. I take the pre with me everywhere I go and have been and it has never let me down and has been on every record I've done for about the last five or six years. If there isn't a good 67 available it also sounds great with a 251 and if neither of those mics work for a particular singer SM7 is the fallback.

Have used it in rooms which have had pretty much everything imaginable available to choose from and it always wins (or at least does what i want it to quickly)
