well not exactly ghetto...
but as rick has asked - some pictures of the rack.
6110 on the top right.
and DBX 160X (black face, balanced in/out, no transformer) on the bottom right. i have two more of these in a travelling rack too.
in the second photo you can see the 901's in the left most rack.

FYI how things are set up..
left rack (furthest from the console) is EQ and FX
middle is pre's/ pre/ comps
right rack (closest to the console) are the most used things, and most often adjusted (comps)

the midax XL42 ontop of the right rack usually doesn't live in the studio, it tours with me (and the other pair of dbx160's and a BSS402) likewise the avalon 737.

ill take some photos in the live room recording jack cartys vocal next week - but this week im thick in broadcast world - one yesterday in melbourne, ASTRA awards loaded in today in sydney, and other sydney live records tomorrow and friday.

Currently using a Neumann U89 into a UA 6176. Normally would use my Beesneez Arabella but it's been away in Ohio getting fixed. Ben has upgraded me to a Producer series and has been promising delivery but still no sign of it yet...

GAS where selling two AD&R Stressor's a few years ago, and for a great price......I just missed out.

Yeah , I didn't even know they had them or I would have bought them. I found out when they got them out to pack them and I said WTF, thanks for telling me. I think they came from Metrop when we were all assistants there. When I think about some of the stuff that was sitting unused out the back in the old store room that I coulda bought for a song I cry.
Mine is trannyless, I would like to add them at some point.
The other thing about them is they came as pin 3 hot, so if you connect them to an unbalanced input you can short + to ground and they sound like they are broken. Someone else buys them cheap and resolders the output xlr's and hey presto.

Hi, the orange light is the power light.
I love the Compex and Vocal Stressor. Nothing else I've used is as versatile or powerful. And such a great sonic signature too.
Compex is unbal, Vocal Stressor is balanced with Sowters.
The Compex is newer, it has the pre emphasis for the limit section, whereas the Vocal Stressor doesn't.
I really want another Vocal Stressor.

I have a compex - they are cool but a bit weird.

I reckon the secret to their sound is the fact that they're unbalanced and running them with balanced gear means they're right at the limit of their headroom.

Me and rob stuck MCI transformers in (I think - Rob?) which improved headroom slightly - but you still have to run the output very hot to get unity at +4.

As they say, you can't believe everything you read on the interweb, so take this with the proverbial grain of salt but i have read a few times that William Wittman, who really knows the compex say the Daking comps are a very acceptable alternative, and there is a reissue out there as well. They are such a great looking bit of functional no frills kit.

One of the things I really like is that there is an input and a threshold, and that the overload character is quite usable, along with the super fast and dual release possible. Not sure if the Daking has those features.
I don't have headroom problems with mine, but I tend to think of the output controls as attenuators and run them pretty much flat out. That said, there isn't much level drive out of them, but that's ok for what they do.

OK, here are some pics of the home vocal chain. These are also pics of the infamous outdoor dunny which I built for the wife last year.

As for the chain: the Bottle goes into the Avalon... not very complicated. At home I don't do any tweaking, I just try to get a good clean track which Marc (engineer at Laughing Duck) can work with.

I should have the Vocal Stressor manual somewhere...
I am rediscovering how great the ADR Gemini is too.

P.S, I am really enjoying having four DeltaLabs Effectrons. I have the 1, the II, the III and a Jnr. All have over 1 sec of delay. The III has an envelope follower, but the Jnr has the best sound.

I was looking at Joe's Baby Animal Neutral the other night trying to think a way to use the guts of it, it's already 20K input and 48V powered. Just don't need the phantom and polarity etc. and 60 db of gain is probably a bit more than necessary....

So I have had a Chandler Germanium Mic Pre/Di for quite a while now.
I have been using it for vocals and stuff. I was thinking of getting it out of the shed again.
It seems like a hit and miss affair depending on what mic and source you use it on.
Has anyone else had experience with this pre for their vocal chain?
Maybe I just like a cleaner sound.

Somewhat similar - I have an Elcom Germanium pre (early 60s) that I try on various things - I used it as a line amp on some backing vocals and it worked well. It's very nice on drums played with brushes using a clean condensor - adds that bit of grit.

I am cutting guide acoustic guitar and vocal parts for my next album atm.

Last night I used a Beyer M201 into a BAE 1073DMP.

I just got the M201 of a T Rocker. I tells ya, I am super impressed with this mic.

If you stay super still whilst tracking your vocal, it is probably the best dynamic I have used for vocals, but you have to stay still and I sang into it sideways with a pop screen. So not the most ideal thing for clients, but for me, it was great.

The rejection on that mic is incredible.
